TTC after 35

Yet another update.

Went back this morning. It's not looking great. I still only have 2 follies that are growing and the one on the right is still small, as in not one that they would side.  The doctor who saw me this morning said they would normally want to go to retrieval with 3-4, and that I may want to consider cancelling this cycle so they don't take me through a procedure for one follicle. I told here there were 5 small ones this weekend and she said they are still there, but they are not growing.

She also said that my doctor will look at the report and there are ways to adjust the protocol to get me to respond better, so that it is not a definite that I would need to cancel the cycle. I am at CD 11 now, so I guess I have a few more days to work with, but with IUI I normally triggered at this point.

I'm trying not to panic and be calm. If I have to cancel and change this to IUI this cycle then ok. If it doesn't work I will move on to the next cycle and try again there is really nothing I can do about that  beyond what I am already doing, but I am frustrated with my body and the fact that it's not working the way it's supposed to.

I'll know more in a couple of hours, I wanted to wait to post until then but writing it out is actually helping a little bit.

DH came with me this morning and I was really glad he was there--it was nice to have a hug after hearing this news.

TTC since 3/2010. Me 41, DH-49. After 3 years, 6 IUIs and several IVFs we have finally have our beautiful baby girl, born on 11/7/13.

Re: Yet another update.

  • I am so sorry.  This is my 4th attempt at IVF, I have been cancelled 2 of my 4 attempts.  I have read that AMA and DOR women tend to produce only one good egg each month regardless of protocol used.  My first transfer we transferred one 8 cell embryo, and today we will again transfer one (which I hope is the same quality).  It's heartbreaking-because after all you've been through it seems like you should be entitled to more.  Have heard of some clinics using Mini-IVF, focusing on getting that one egg and maximizing it's chances of implantation.  I don't know who does Mini-IVF in my area, but I think that this is something that I might be looking into more if this cycle is yet another bust.  Thinking and praying for all women here each day and hoping that we get to move to PG after 35 soon.  (((((hugs)))))  Glad that DH has been supportive and that you are on this journey together.

Or if you are, isn't it only slightly DOR? WTF?   I know you don't want to think about another cycle but what's the situation there? Are you covered by insurance?  For me, I "think" the RE will do my retrieval with my 2.5 follies because they know this is my last shot. My secondary insurance is going to deny me more cycles and I just can't justify paying the difference for 1 extra egg since I make one naturally.

WTF is right.  I am not DOR, there has never been a concern about the numbers. I don't know what they are off the top of my head, but I posted them a while back, I'll have to look.

I am lucky because I have a total of 3 lifetime IVF cycles covered. Unlimited IUI, so if it changes to an IUI cycle, it will be covered.  My copay is $1500 for the IVF, but at this point in the year, we have reached our OOP max, so I don't have to pay for this or any other cycle before the end of the year. I'm hoping to get a second cyle in before the end of the year but I don't want to feel like it's rushed.

Still waiting for my call from the nurse. Usually she is very calming but I might be a little to close to the edge today to be calm.  I know it's not over, but I'm just really getting discouraged.

How are you doing today? When do you go back for another u/s?

  • I'm kind of in a daze about it. I'm upset but not emotional yet. That is partly because I have no one to talk about it with at work and I don't want to look like a drama queen at my desk.

They still haven't called from the office to schedule the appointment for Friday...they have about another 30 minutes and then I'm picking up the phone.

    I'm so annoyed.

First, I'm really sorry it's not going well. It's such an ordeal to go through that it's hard to believe when results are poor.

Thanks Mtlaurel, I appreciate the insight about going through the covered cycles and being left with nothing.

Now that this cycle has been cancelled I have to check with the financial person and my insurance about what that does to my coverage. I get why they would want to cancel for my poor response, I just hope it didn't eat up one of my cycles.

I did Estradiol for 10 days, I'm not sure about over supression, I will ask on Friday when I meet with my doctor.

The nurse told me to do ovidrel tonight so that I can ovulate soon and move on to the next cycle as soon as possible. She didn't say anything about converting to IUI, which I would do.  I need to make a list of questions and call back, ugh.

I'm really hoping I don't have to do the Estrace for this next cycle, it takes so much f-ing time. It's like i have to go through 2 cycles before I can do anything and this embryology lab closes for OSHA inspection for 2 weeks in December so they can't do anything for IVF during that period, which is totally annoying and has already delayed me doing this once, earlier this summer when they closed for 2 weeks in June.

TTC since 3/2010. Me 41, DH-49. After 3 years, 6 IUIs and several IVFs we have finally have our beautiful baby girl, born on 11/7/13.

  • I hope you can get it converted to an IUI, after all that you've been through to get to this point.

And, my clinic told me that I'd have to get through retrieval for it to be an official cycle in the eyes of insurance. So, I would hope that by cancelling now, that means you still have 3 covered IVF cycles remaining. Of course, I really hope you won't need them. Hang in there.

So very sorry. Definatly call back and ask all of your questions so you will not be in the agony I was in last night, I don't wish that doubt second-guessing on anyone. I was told I could go right to next cycle - take Ovidrel, go in on day 20 to confirm it worked, start Estrace for the approx 7 days, wait for day 1, stim day 3. FYI for the December closing they can not begin anyone on stims between Dec 3 and Dec 30. I hated hearing that also! I feel your frustration. :-(
