Maternity leave

I have an appt today to discuss my leave with "hr"

What are some key things I need to ask or tell them? What should I expect them to ask/tell me?

Re: Maternity leave

  • Find out if they pay your medical ins while you are out, or if you have to pay during those months.  (the part that would have been deducted from your paycheck).

Find out what paperwork you need for disability if you are getting STD payments.

Find out what paperwork you need to add baby to your insurance.

  • What percentage of your salary you receive while on STD, and how long you receive disability (most companies give 6 weeks for vaginal birth/ 8 weeks for c-section), sometimes there is a 1 week waiting period before STD kicks in.  Do you have the option to use vacation and/or sick time to get paid while on leave?

  • Yeah, I have 2 weeks of PTO for the year, which I assume I'll have to use before anything else.

I don't have insurance through my company though, which seems to be the biggest thing to discuss...

  • Find out how your pay will be given during your maternity leave.  My company pays all of the leave payment up front, so I get one like HUGE check. Then they take any time off out of the next few checks, so I get 3 or 4 checks that are lower than what I usually get. It makes a different for budgeting!
  • I think first you need to know if you are getting paid during leave besides your 2 weeks of PTO.  Do you have STD?  If you do, your employer does not dictate how long it is so don't ask them.  Your doctor is the one diagnosing your disability and stating how long you have off.

Definitely find out how to sign up for insurance because you will probably still be out when the 31 days are up then it will be too late.

Not neccesarily.  I have about 35 days, I think.  I don't have to use those days before anything else.  It's totally seperate.  I plan to use them up simply to be home longer -- but one has nothing to do with the other (at least where I work).  So, that's something else to find out about too.

Also - If I tell them ahead of time that I would like my new LO to be added to my current insurance -- they will automatically enroll her for me once she is born (of course I have to let them know when she arrives).  No paperwork to fill out or anything.  They make it super simple for us here.
