TTC After a Loss

How long is normal to wait after m/c to TTC?

Hi everyone, I'm pretty new here. I just had a m/c start at about 9 weeks (my first time getting pregnant), baby stopped growing at 5 1/2 weeks. I've been bleeding for about 8 days, and my follow up appointment is a little over a week away. My doctor told me when I found out I was having a m/c that we should wait to have 3 normal cycles before we start trying again so my lining will have a chance to build up. I obviously plan on listening to my doctor, but after seeing how many people are trying again after they first see AF I was wondering if anyone else's doctor told them to wait three cycles? Is this common? It looked like most people are told to try again as soon as they see AF.

  • Every doctor you talk to will have a different answer.

I personally didn't wait, and we tried again immediately after my miscarriage bleeding (which was not AF).

  • Every woman is different and every MC is different. If your doctor told you to wait three cycles, then that's how long you should wait. Yes, some women are told they can safely TTC again after one or two cycles, or even right after their loss. But if your doctor feels you need to wait, then that's what I would suggest doing.

  • I had to wait for AF to come & then got the ok.  I have heard of many people having to wait 3 cycles though.  It is not out of the norm.

  • Every case is different. I was told to wait 3 weeks (for thyroid testing), then after those results came in I was told to wait two cycles, but then after my follow up appt, my dr. said that I could TTC after my first AF (which had already started by then).

Ask your dr how long and why at your follow up appt. Some times the reason is for physical healing and other times it's for emotional healing. Your dr will have a better idea of how you are healing after your appt.

    I'm sorry for your loss.

  • all of what everyone said. I was told as soon as my HCG levels went to 0 we could start trying, we decided to wait until AF showed once.

Every doctor is different, I would listen to your doctor.

  • Everyone is different but most say 1-3 cycles. I would ask your doctor about it though. One of my doctors said 1 cycle and the other said 2 cycles. When I questioned the one doctor  about waiting 2 cycles she said it was due to emotional reasons but if I felt ready there was no harm.

Listen to your doctor as he or she knows your situation the best, but do feel free to have a conversation about why they want you wait that long. GL!

  • Doctor recommendations are based on their personal experience and what research they have been reading.

As every pregnancy is different, every m/c is different and I would say that's also what they are basing their advice on as well.

I would ask at the appointment if you are getting antsy.  I was told to wait after one period and thought that would be so easy but my period is no where in sight and it has been 8 weeks.

I hope that all goes well and if your period comes at 4 weeks, 3 cycles may not seem that long!

  • I would follow your Drs. orders. Everyone is different.

After my first m/c I was told we could try again after 1 AF. We got pregnant the cycle afterward and that led to another m/c & D & C. We now have to wait 3 cycles. The Dr. said it was unrelated but in the back of my mind I wonder if we would've waited a little longer would we have had another m/c? We are currently on our 3rd cycle TTA and it is going very fast.

    Good luck!!!

  • My Dr had told me to wait 3 cycles, but if I got PG on the 2nd cycle thats ok.  I was to be 10 weeks and baby stopped growing at 6 weeks.  Its been 9 weeks since my m/c and AF hasn't shown up yet- last week I called the Dr and they prescribed me some Provera to jump start my period.  Then the nurse said it was ok to start trying again after I get my period.  I plan on waiting till after my next AF after the provera, just to make sure.
