Home cold remedies

The day after I found out I was pregnant, I came down with a nasty head cold.  It has been awful because I have not been able to take anything for it.  I was thinking "Okay, 1 week, I can make it".  Then I realized, I plan to breastfeed after giving birth, so chances are I will have at least a few colds before it is safe to take meds again.

Right now I have an awful cough, so my more immediate concern is home remedies to get rid of a cough.  I sweear co-workers and clients are afraid to come near me at work.

Also, for future reference, any remedies for congestion and  runny nose?

Re: Home cold remedies

  • Have you ever tried a neti pot? They're pg safe and freaky but not painful and I found that they helped w nasal symptoms.

  • I second the neti-pot as well, I had a cold last week and it really did help out. It forces everything out of your nose. Unfortunately my cold turned into an infection so I had to go on antibiotics :-(  I held out for a week and it wasn't getting better only worse when I called my ob he prescribed something I could take.  I really was hesitant to take it but I guess there wasn't much I could do.

You could also try a humidifier when you sleep at night and drinking hot water with lemon and honey is good too.

  • I have one of these https://www.walgreens.com/store/c/neilmed-sinus-rinse-allergy-%26-sinus-kit/ID=prod2598807-product instead of the traditional Neti Pot (it's the same thing, but you have control over how quickly the wash flows through your sinuses.

I got mine at Target, and I use it twice/day almost every day.  It felt really strange at first, but now I've gotten used to it and it's no more bizarre than brushing my teeth.

  • I never take medicine for a cold.  I swear by my neti-pot and honey.  I will swallow a spoonful of honey at the first sign of an itchy throat (first sign I'm getting a cold). I'm usually feeling better within a day or two of the honey.  I also drink lots of tea normally, but will drink 2-3 cups a day when I don't feel well.  I always make my own teas from things I grow in my garden, but typically I drink sliced up ginger, a slice of lemon and a tablespoon of honey when I'm not feeling well (this tea helped with my m/s as well).  GL and hope you're feeling better soon!
