Cloth Diapering

Help me "focus" my shopping

Here is what I have so far:
22 Orange (Newborn) GMD Prefolds
12 Yellow (Small) GMD Prefolds
5 XS BumGenius AIOs
2 Thirsties Duo Cover Size 1 (1 snap, 1 velcro)
1 XS Gen-Y Cover
2 Prorap Covers Newborn
1 Bummis Super Whisper Wrap Newborn
1 Bummis Super Whisper Wrap Small
10 BumGenius 4.0 (5 Snaps, 5 Aplix)
4 Go Green Pocket Diapers
1 SunBaby Pocket Diaper
2 BSRB Fitteds
1 Baby Ten Fitted
1 Twinkie Tush Fitted
1 Monkey Snuggles Overnight Fitted
1 Tangerine Baby Fitted
1 BeBeBritches AI2
2 Better Bottoms AI2
3 Snappis
1 Planet Wise pail liner
1 XL Planet Wise hanging wet bag
1 GoGreen wet bag (probably a medium size in most brands)

Here is what I know I still need/want:
1 wool soaker (Need your help on this ladies! What should I get?)
1 pail liner
1 medium wet bag for diaper bag
Cloth wipes (Would 3 dozen be enough? I'm thinking of just going the wash cloth route.)
Hemp inserts (Help here too, please. What do you recommend?)
Detergent (Still haven't made up my mind what to use. We have an old top loader and hard water.)

I want to focus on filling in any holes. Any suggestions? We'd like to wash every other day or so.

Thank you! :)

For the pail liner and wet bag, I would definitely stick with Planet Wise. That's the only brand I've found reliable and durable.  Hemp inserts - I like Hemparooz.  Detergent - I have a TL and hard water too.  I tried Rockin' Green (hard rock) and it was awful for us.  We switched to Tide Ultra powder and haven't had any issues.  HTH!!!

  • Why only one pail liner? I'd get two so one is always clean/you have one in the Paul during diaper-washing. We have PW ones as well and have been pleased so far. For the wool soaker, I'd probably just something upcycled from a reputable etsy seller. No help on hemp inserts...I need some as well and there was a thread discussing brands people like on here a couple days ago. I think I'll get some AFFF ones if I can. The number of wipes depends on the mama. We have 40 of the Spasilk washcloths from Amazon and that's plenty for us but we truly only use them for wipes. I'd highly recommend that brand, too. They're a good size and thickness but dirt cheap. I like them far better than my homemade wipes (for wipes). The homemade wipes make great washcloths though.

Lynn- I only listed one pail liner in the "need" category because I already have one in the "have" category :) I only ordered one at the time I came across a super clearance deal because I lost my mind, haha. I should've gotten two then!

Should I get a small size wool soaker so the weight range is bigger? Or go with a newborn and have an excuse to get another when baby outgrows it?

  • Oh, and for soap, I currently use Charlie's and have been really happy so far. I know a lot of people live it but others really dislike it. If it ends up causing problems, I'd probably try Country Save next. I can't get any CD-friendly detergent locally and really wouldn't want to try Tide unless I felt I had to (some mamas swear by it, though). My theory is get what's easiest (Amazon) and cheapest first.

Here is what I know I still need/want:
1 wool soaker (Need your help on this ladies! What should I get?- I started out with an upcycled one from myecobaby on Etsy...it's good to start out but my favorites now are from WCW. We have a small and a medium from myecobaby and he outgrew the small pretty quickly. I'd probably skip the newborn and go straight to small).
    1 pail liner
1 medium wet bag for diaper bag
Cloth wipes (Would 3 dozen be enough? I'm thinking of just going the wash cloth route- Yep! I think 3 dozen is enough to start.)
Hemp inserts (Help here too, please. What do you recommend?- We have Thirsties hemp inserts, small and large. They're great as both inserts and doublers)
Detergent (Still haven't made up my mind what to use. We have an old top loader and hard water.- I have hard water and a FL'er, so what works for my wash routine may be more finicky than yours. Whatever you choose, don't buy too much of it. We went through so many different detergents before finding a good fit for our CDs. Now we have tons of different detergents to use up on our clothes. FWIW, we finally settled on Tide Ultra after trying Charlie's, RnG, and Dropps).

I want to focus on filling in any holes. Any suggestions? We'd like to wash every other day or so.

    Thank you! :)

HTH! Good luck! You seem pretty well prepared...I'm sure you'll make some changes to your stash once LO gets here, but looking good so far!

  • We have 3 dozen SpaSilk washclothes that we use as wipes.  They are really inexpensive and get the job done.  I also second PW pail linener/wet bags.  I need to get more wetbags from them because they are so great.  We have a TLer and hard water and I really like DROPPS.  I use two pouches and haven't had any issues so far.  Good luck!

  • Thanks for the replies everyone! Very helpful :)

I started buying while we were TTCing and since we don't know the sex of the baby yet, I've been focusing on finishing up my stash because I'm itching to buy baby stuff! We find out on the 29th, so I plan to buy a couple really boyish/girly diapers then. Good idea on getting newborn fitteds for photos! :)

  • I still haven't gotten into wool. One more thing that has to be cared for a certain way - I'll only buy if I find I need it.

Pail liners - I have Monkey Doodlez and they're doing great after 5 months. For all the love PW gets, two posters on this board have had defective bags or liners lately.

Wet bags - they're all really about the same. They come up on deals sites a lot - watch mamabargains, ecobabybuys, babysteals, etc. I got fuzzibuns off ecobabybuys.

Hemp - I have 3 layer amp boosters and like them.

Detergent - currently using the EFF recipe. Seems okay.

  • Funky, if you're still around, I'm VERY impressed with your advance planning! I've just cut-and-pasted this thread to focus my own shopping. What I have so far is: a fetus. Yep, need to get on that shopping list.

Hahaha Yes that's a good start!

I started buying a few cycles before this 3rd BFP, so this definitely hasn't all been bought during this pregnancy. I just buy when I see good deals... or irresistible prints.

  • I personally would get some more NB and S covers.

We have a ton and usually find we go through them all because we are lazy and trifold our prefolds so we have a fair number of poopy covers to change.  Our 7 lb 14 oz baby certainly didn't fit into the smalls right away and honestly I still prefer newborn size on her at 8 1/2ish.  We're loving our Imse Vimse, so maybe a few of those (the NB size fit right away but does run big so should help you transition from NB to S)?

I would say 3-4 dozen wipes minimum and more is better.  We often use them to stick under LOs bottom after we have removed the dirty diaper but before we have wiped her clean.  So we' use 2-4 per change.   I have some of the target baby washcloths and some flannel/flannel and flannel/terry ones that I made.  I prefer the double layer ones to the washcloths personally because I like to protect my hand pretty well from the baby poop!  Get a dozen of a couple kinds to try and see what works for you!
