Hi guys,
I am pregnant with my first child, my husband and I recently found out it is a little girl. Needless to say, I have gone crazy shopping for her! I started feeling like I had too many newborn sized outfits after awhile and have refrained from buying the smaller sizes lately. However, now I keep going back and forth. She IS going to need clothes that fit her when she's born, even if they don't last long. So my question is: What size is your LO wearing and how old are they? How long did they wear "newborn" sized clothes? I just want a good idea of how much of the newborn outfits I need and when I should move on to buying 3 months and up. Do the sizes on the tags seem to correlate with your babies age? Thanks in advance ![]()
Re: what size is your LO wearing?
It all depends on the manufacturers. My LO was in Newborn clothing for a couple weeks but when she was just 4 weeks - she could fit into some 3 month labelled clothing.
I bought about a 7 onesies and a few sleepers at the NB size and just went with that. Being a summer baby we didn't need much else. Obviously I couldn't resist so I would buy some 0-3mth sized stuff and if need be, roll up the sleeves or legs (at least this way she would get some wear out of it).
Basically get enough to get you through till you do laundry and then see how your baby grows (how quickly) and buy as you go.
Every baby is different with how they gain weight. My friends baby girl didn't change from her 6lb birthweight for over a month because she had trouble gaining weight and on the other hand, I had a friend who's LO was gaining weight like crazy and was wearing mostly 6 -9mth clothing when he was only 4 months.
DD is 3mths and is wearing 6-9mths. She was 8.7lb at birth, so she was only able to wear most of the NB outfits for about 2.5 wks. She grew super fast and after the first week even the NB diapers didn't fit her.
Do you have an ultra sound coming up? I had one about a month before my due date and it showed DD would be a round 7 to 8lbs. This gave me a general idea of what to buy her. Also, we both expected to have a big baby as both of us had been born around 8lbs.
Hope this helps!
we didnt get much newborn size and she ended up wearing newborn clothes for 8 weeks and diapers for 10 weeks. she was only 8 days early, so not a preemie. just not a fast weight gainer. it depends on the brand but she wears 0-3months or 3-6 (like for carters since they dont have 0/3 size) she will be 3 months in a week and a half.
Congrats on your baby girl!
Our LO was in newborn's the longest (diapers too) but he was also a preemie. We switched to 0-3 (and size 1 diapers) hmm maybe around 2-2 1/2 mos or so and he's all ready grown out of them at 3 mos, He is now in 3 months/3-6 months (for sleepers, he's long) and size 2 diapers. I think the size 2 diapers will last a while though the side tabs are SO long and stretchy!
I think every baby is different though, I wouldn't buy her whole wardrobe in a certain size, maybe a few things and then wait til after shes born and see how big she is and how fast she grows. I know it's tough, baby outfits are too cute
DD was born 7lbs 4oz, was down to 6lbs 13oz when we left the hospital and was in NB clothes (Carters) comfortably until about 8 weeks.
DD is petite (so am I). She was 9lbs 13oz at her 2 month appt.
She's barely fitting in 3M at almost 11 weeks - still pretty huge, we had bought two "small" footy pajamas from Carters target line "Just You" and they've worked well during the last couple weeks since she isn't fitting in NB well anymore but is still swimming in 3M.
BTW: DD lived in footy pajamas for the first few weeks, so we ended up returning a ton of "real" NB outfits.
Another word of advice? Avoid footy pajamas with buttons. They're super annoying when its 3am and LO is screaming because she's cold!
DS was in Newborn clothing for the first month. We had 4 sleepers, a few pairs of pants and a BUNCH of onesies in Newborn size all of which are Carters brand. He was in Newborn diapers for the first 3-4 weeks and then we started putting him in size 1 diapers bc he was leaking through them. DS was 7lbs 12oz and 21 1/2 inches when he was born. And at his one month well check he was 9lbs 15oz and 22 1/2 inches. So he is a long baby and that is the main reason why we had to switch him to 0-3 and 3mth clothing the sleepers were just too cramped for his long legs.
Hope that helps
This was the case for me. At 9 weeks, he's already in Carters 6 month clothes. I WISH I bought more sleepers with footies than I did and that I DIDN'T get pants and shirts... he never wears them but I love his "I love Mommy", etc. footie PJ's...

Dear God, Since I couldn't hold my little one in my lap and tell him about you, could you hold him in your lap and tell him about me?
PgAL and PAL always welcome...I wouldn't get a ton of newborn clothes. We had about 10 NB onesies, a few footed sleepers, a few sleep gowns, and 4 pairs of NB pants. DD was 6lb 6 oz when born and fit into them until about 5 weeks (8.5lbs). I thought we didn't have enough...but turns out she didn't even wear everything. Now she is in 0-3 but it is a little big on her.
I was the kind of person who thought they would dress their LO up everyday to look cute.. but the first few weeks she lived in the side snap t-shirts and a diaper. It was just sooo much easier (especially when we had ot change her diaper almost every hour- she is a super-pooper). That being said, I only had 4 side snap t-shirts and so I would have to do wash almost every other day in the beginning since she would spit up on it.
So, it depends on what you end up preferring to dress your DD in... and how much laundry you want to do. Also, I don't hate snaps...but the button up footed sleeper are a PITA! When shopping just keep in mind to look at how you put it on (over their head, side snap, snaps all the way up, zipper, etc). I won't purchase anything that snaps all the way up anymore!
Pearl grew out of NB clothes in about 2weeks. But they go up to 8lbs and she was born 7lbs 3oz. Now she is in 0-3, and some 3month outfits.
Blue was born 6lbs 10oz and he stayed in NB for about 3weeks...
My LO was 7 lbs 14 at birth and now at 3 weeks she is between 8 1/2 and 9. she is basically out of her nb stuff so I would say we got 2 1/2 weeks. Some 0-3 fit large at first and some fit fine, it all fits now. Save the receipts and wait to wash anything until you know what size your baby is.
I sooo second the sleeper recommendation. LO hated anything that pulled on over the head or legs at first so onesies, most t shirts and pants just sat in her drawers. Some of what you like will vary on the weather. Ours turned cool right when she was born so we prefer long sleeves and feet. In the summer it would have been t shirts and a diaper only.
we bought almost everything used in like new condition since I knew it would all get worn so little. Wait to but cute outfits until you hit the larger sizes if you can resist!!
My LO was 9.14 at birth and is about 13 lbs now. He will be 6 weeks old on Sunday. Currently, he is wearing a 3-6 month onesie from BabyGap, 0-3 sweat pants made by Carter, and a newborn jacket (not sure who makes it..).
He wore very, very few newborn clothes as he was kind of a moose! Most of the clothes he has been wearing since birth have been 0-3 months, but as you can tell from his current outfit, size varies greatly with designer/manufacturer.
Sorry that doesn't help much. You can always buy more clothes, leave tags on and return if you find you don't need them!
Good luck!
My LO was born 6lb 14 oz and wore newborn for about 6-7 weeks and NB diapers for that long too. The doctors were predicting an 8 pound baby so we were surprised how tiny she was.
I find Ralph Lauren runs small though and she already outgrew a 0-3 outfit from there. She fits perfectly in Carters 0-3.
Just incase grab some newborn onesies.
My son was 8lbs 12oz at birth, 9 lbs 4oz at his 2-week checkup, and is still wearing newborn clothes at 4 weeks old. He was 22" long at birth, so he never really fit into newborn clothes with feet on them, but he is still easily able to wear pants, shirts and onesies. He is also able to fit into some 0-3/3 month clothes, but some are still too big on him. Carter's clothes seem to run a little smaller than the rest...he is wearing 3-month onesies from Carter's, but newborn clothes from Target.
We just moved him up to size 1 diapers a few days ago.

6 lb 11 oz at birth, 2.5 weeks early. Still wearing NB. Going to wash 0-3 soon. We only have about 5 outfits (footed onesies) in NB and a couple of things for night. She usually wears one outfit a day. Footed onesies/sleepers are the best at that age. We were given onesies and pants from my sister to borrow and she rarely wears them.
I think we have 10-15 in 0-3 and that is probably plenty.
LO is 3 weeks today and still has a ton of room in Newborn. She was 7 lbs 5 oz at 2 week check up. I did not have hardly any newborn on hand and had to go buy several things. I know everyone on here will say that at showers you will get a ton of newborn. But out of both my showers I only received 3 newborn outfits. Even now when people are sending gifts I still get 3 months and 6-9 month clothing.
To give you an idea. We have about 7-8 sleepers and about 7 outfits that we are using right now. This seems to be all we need.
Sizes on the tags seem to run just a little big for us. We have 2 Circo (Target) brand sleepers that run large. Carters runs pretty true to size and Gerber runs a little smaller than all the rest, but seems to fit DD the best.
LO is 8 weeks old and still wearing NB clothes and diapers. She is just now starting to get a little long for the NB sleepers so we've moved up to 0-3 in those. She was 6.12 when she was born and 7.5 at her 2 week appt. I would estimate about 9 1/2 lbs now.
My baby was 10lbs 12 oz when he was born. I kept him in newborn stuff for the first month or so and then he moved to 0-3 months. He is 10 weeks right now and is wearing 3mo and some small 6 mo outfits. I think that probably isn't the norm though. Just wanted you to know on the short end how long you might need newborn stuff. Also, people will buy you a bunch of clothes at showers. I don't know if you have had yours yet, but I would hold off on buying stuff until after. As far as pants go, newborn pants will last you a while. My babies legs were all curled up until a couple weeks ago so 0-3 month pants were too long and too big in the waist.
Good luck!
My LO was so big, that he couldn't fit into any of his newborn clothes. To make it even worse, once he was allowed to wear onsies, he was too long for the 0-3 months. He is 7 weeks and the 3-6 months are already straining lengthwise.
Your final ultrasounds should give you a good estimate on what size to invest in by weight. But your best is to get more side snap shirts in 0-3 month size. You will get alot of use out of these.
Same here - we gave away all of our NB stuff because they never fit. Our LO was 10 lb 5oz at birth, and went straight to 0-3 mo clothes and size 1 diapers. We received TONS of clothes at our shower, some of which were never worn. He just turned 8 weeks, and started wearing 6 mo clothing around 6.5-7 weeks.
Buy big because you LO will grow into the clothes.
I also agree that different brands fit differently. Gerber runs small, Carter's clothes are long and lean, Circo runs short and wide...etc.
