1st Trimester

BFP, Baby #2, and Pedialyte?

Hello!  We just found out we are ~5 weeks pregnant with our second child!  We are very excited but nervous with how our now 19 month old son will handle the new baby.  Are any of you that are pregnant with your second child doing anything to prepare your first?  I know it's early and he's really young but just thought I would see what others are doing.

On another note, I have stopped drinking my morning couple cups of coffee and am having headaches.  I am trying to stay hydrated but am definitely not used to drinking all of the water you are supposed to be drinking.  Has anyones doctor recommended drinking pedialyte?

TIA!

Re: BFP, Baby #2, and Pedialyte?

  • Pedialyte helped me immensely in the early weeks of my pregnancy!  I was drinking two or three glasses a day.  Perfectly fine during pregnancy and much better for you than gatorade.
  • Congrats! My DD is going to be almost 3 when i have baby #2 and I just keep talking to her about a brother and sister. I ask her if she is ready to be a big girl and have a new baby around. I know she might not understand quite yet but I think it helps to tell them those things.

  • My son is 22 months right now and yes, I am nervous about how he will handle it.

He started climbing early, and tried to climb out of his crib around 18 months - so out of necessity we transitioned his crib to the toddler bed before we even got pregnant.  So the concept of a bed will not be new to him.  However, he is still in the nursery - and that will be for the new baby.

Literally, as soon as we are successfully out of the first trimester, we will make the transition to his big boy room.  I want him to have as much time to make the transition as he needs and don't want to feel rushed if it takes a couple weeks (or longer).  My goal is to have as little change as possible for him as my due date gets closer.

My big concern right now is potty training.  I have no intention of pushing PT or trying to get it to happen before the baby is born.  But he will be 2 1/2 when the baby gets here, and I have a feeling that will either 1) severely interfere with any progress we are making or 2) severely delay the process all together.  But whatever, I can roll with that . . .

  • DS is 2.5 now. He's already potty trained so that's a bonus.  My concerns aren't about him being a big brother. I think he'll be wonderful.

I'm worried about pulling him from daycare for a year (he loves it) and also how I'm going to make sure I have enough time with him.

  • Jake will be 3.5 when this one is born. He's seen pics of me when I was pregnant with him and I tell him he was in my belly then. Before we really tried TTC I asked if he wanted a little baby brother or sister. I used Caillou and Rosie to explain having a sibling. He said yes and when I asked if he'd love it/play with it etc, he also said yes. But when I told him there was a baby in my belly, he told me he wanted to be a baby again and get in my belly again, like the pictures. So, don't think he gets it yet but we'll keep working on it!

  • Thank you all!  Very helpful responses!  I didn't even think about the effect on potty training.  Hopefully he will be on of those kids that I hear are easy to train!

  • My DS is 19 months old now also and he doesn't understand the concept of a new baby at all haha.  We just keep telling him that he's getting to be such a big boy now and that there will be a little baby in the house soon for him to help take care of.  He just looks and me and says "baby" and keeps playing tho haha.  Hopefully as my belly gets bigger and we can show him ultrasound pictures he'll understand a little better!
