Cloth Diapering

Plan to use Pockets & AIOs.. How many should I have?

I'm a FTM, due in 5 weeks. I am excited to cloth diaper, but would like to know how many diapers I should have on hand. I'd like to use Pockets & AIOs.. So far I have 2 small BumGenius 4.0 Hook and Loop Cloth Diapers, 6 small Charlie Bananas, and 18 small inserts total.. The Charlie Bananas are likely not going to fit her right away though!

  • You should have at least 24, but 30 is better. I'm a little confused about what you have so far, because the BG 4.0 is a one-size pocket diaper. Their sized diapers are the All-in-ones(3.0s). So do you have two small AIO 3.0s, or two OS 4.0s pockets? Also, why do you have so many inserts compared to the number of diapers you have?

Either way, none of these will fit a newborn. Even the smalls will be too big for a while. Wyatt was almost 9lbs at birth, and he was 3 weeks old before I could put him in a small AIO, and even then it was kind of big around the legs. You will need another option (aka disposables or a newborn stash) until he can fit into what you have.

  • We have 18 pockets.  The BG 4.0s.  She is JUST fitting into them now - she's 3 months today.  (Was 8 pounds 7 ounces at birth.)

I agree w/all of this. If you want to CD through the NB stage, I'd pick up some PF and/or fitteds and covers and a handful of AIOs are handy as well. For NB stage, we had 36 diapers and that was none too many (DS pooped a TON during that time).  Our OS stash is primarily pockets and we have 34 of them plus a dozen PF and a couple Thirsties covers.  I'd certainly try several pockets or AIOs before you buy your whole stash as you may surprise yourself w/what you do or don't like.

  • Ditto what everyone else has said.  Our LO is just under 3 weeks and has been CDed since day 2 in the hospital.  She was 7lb 14 oz at birth and is now about 8 1/2 lbs give or take.  She's still in XS covers and AIOs although we're using a few S pockets.  You'll want a lot more diapers and some smaller ones to start with unless you're expecting a very big baby or are going to use disposables for awhile.

I've found that we love trifolded infant prefolds and velcro covers (thirsties, bummis, imse vimese, etc.) for the day and then pockets or BG AIOs overnight and for the diaper bag.  I think she sleeps a little longer with the stay dry plus they are easier to deal with.  I think we have about 3 dozen prefolds, maybe 10 covers (if we snappied I think we could get by with fewer but we have them and we're lazy), and probably a dozen assorted pockets and AIOs.  (We also have about 36 xs fitteds that we rarely reach for, but I thought we would prefer to prefolds--wrong!  Oh well, bought them used.)

We have more CD than we need for every other day washing but with a three story house it's not terrible.  I wouldn't want fewer than 36 changes--she sometimes pees or poops 2-4 times an hour while she's cluster feeding.
