I am pretty sure that DS has a milk/dairy allergy. His skin breaks out in red splotches where ever milk or dairy products contact it. We have been doing soy, and I have been cooking with soy. The sitter has not been. The Doc. said just avoid milk and dairy when he is two we can try again. He admits that he is not familiar with allergies in children. Should I push for tests? Do we need to travel to find a new doctor? (We are in a small town and it is a drive to get to an actual ped. and not just a family Doc.) No one in my or DH's family has ever had a food allergy and what I read on line just makes me paranoid and confused. Help from veterans would be great! Thanks in advance.

Re: When to push for tests?
Your doctor needs to do some research with his peers to give you some direction or you need to find a new doctor. Having a doctor say "I don't know much about this field so I'm going to call person xyz for a consult/referral" is one thing and what should happen. Saying "I don't know- you're on your own here" is another and not ok.
I would do some research on a pediatrician or allergy group in your area and call them for a consult. Get your current pedi to write the referral if you need to.
I would ask for a referral to get some help. or see a new doctor. My son was tested early at the age of 6 months.
Sounds like an allergy to me.
You should request to see an allergist. if your pedi is not familiar with allergies, like most aren't, you should definitely see an allergist.
IMO it does sound like your LO may have a milk allergy and i would get him tested asap. My son would have a rash (sometimes blisters) after an accidental spill of dairy on his skin.. no one in my family or DH's has allergies and my son has 4.
Also, if your sitter is still cooking with dairy -get rid of it from your house. all of it. We did and it's been such a safe zone for DS. Nanny got use to it also. We actually don't have anything with milk/soy/eggs/peanuts in the house and it's amazing how many things this woman can make for her self.
