Cloth Diapering

I saw your reply in my post about septic/powdered detergents...

Do you know how I can tell if I have a filter or when they stopped using them? Our house was built in '78...

Also, do you know if the CD detergent "recipe" on the EFF Blog is safe even if I have a filter?  It uses just oxyclean, borax, and washing soda...

Sorry if I'm bombarding you with questions, I just had really planned to make the detergent because we're CDing to save money and the detergent would only cost somewhere around $0.04 a load lol...

  • I don't know if there's a way to tell. Again, though, you will likely use so little detergent w/your CDs that I wouldn't think it would be a problem. I use about a tsp of detergent per load of CDs but we have a he washer and softened water. Still, w/a regular washer and hard water, you wouldn't use more than a couple T of soap. If the house is 33 years old, I'd guess it has an old-style system but that's just a guess. if you're really worried, use liquid detergents for your clothes and dishes. I have no personal experience w/the EFF homemade soap but I've been on this board for nearly a year. Like just about any soap out there, there are some people that love it. I've also read about a lot of people that didn't feel like it worked well for them. You'll fond that your detergent preference will depend on your water, your washer, etc and what someone else loves, you may hate or vice versa. You could always try it and just use it for clothes if you hate it.
