Is anyone else considered "high risk" because of their weight?

I'm aware that I could stand to lose a few pounds (....and probably a few more after that), and I was in the process of doing so, and then got pregnant. Is anyone else considered high risk because of their weight?

  • Just because you are pregnant, doesn't mean you have to stop exercising or eating right. 

    From the books I've read, if you are significantly overweight...they actually recommend not gaining weight, or actually losing some weight throughout your pregnancy instead of gaining the usual 20-30 pounds. 

    Good luck with your pregnancy, healthy mommy means healthy baby.

    TTC since August 2011 (Me-29, DH-32).
    4/28/2012 - SA: 5% motility.

    8/18/2012 - OHSS - hospitalized, need to wait one cycle to transfer embryo(s) due to OHSS
    8/29/2012 - begin meds for frozen cycle
    10/12/2012 - FET one embryo
    10/24/2012 - Beta #1: 442
    10/26/2012 - Beta #2: 947
    10/29/2012 - Beta #3: 2900!
    11/15/2012 - first u/s: baby measuring perfect, heart rate is right on target
    2/6/2013 - A/S looked perfect. Still team green by choice!
    7/6/2013 - Baby girl born after 44 hours of un-medicated labor, 2 hours of pushing, and emergency c-section due to transverse head.  DD was perfectly healthy at 6 pounds, 14 ounces.  We are thrilled!!
  • I am considered over weight by i dont know... maybe 40 pounds or so... and my OB said Ill be totally fine... I would just talk to your OB if you would be high risk or not

  • Has your doctor told you that you are high risk? Or are you going by things you've read/heard? I am in the same boat; I am considered "obese". My previous Gyn was fat-phobic (actually making the statement that it would "just be easier for her" if I were down to my goal weight before even TRYING to get pregnant!) I had already been losing weight and exercising, and I know that it is considered healthier if you are "normal" weight (because there is less risk of some pregnancy/labor complications like pre-e, etc). I wound up getting pregnant before I had lost much, and found a new OB. He told me that everything so far looks perfectly healthy/normal, and that if I start to gain too much we'll obviously monitor it, but he didn't make me feel like an awful irresponsible person, or too much of a fat slob to bring a new life into this world. If anything, his only concern was about my scar/stomach muscle strength from a liver cancer surgery 3 years ago. (And yes, that event contributed greatly to my weight gain). Basically, I'm trying to do the absolute best I can for my baby and myself, and I refuse to feel guilty for wanting to become a parent even though I'm not in the "best shape of my life". I say just do your best, and concentrate on being the healthiest mom you can be.

  • The doc would have told you were high risk. Even though you might be overweight that doesn't mean that overall you aren't healthy. My doc said that since I am slightly overweight that I could only gain 20 lbs or less for this pregnancy. He mentioned something about my high blood pressure that I have had in the past but felt there was no reason to talk about that until later on in the pregnancy. As long as you are attempting to eat healthier and exercising you should be fine. I was in the same boat with you....I was trying to lose weight until I found out. I have cut out sodas to one per day. You wouldn't believe how much that helps just cutting out one thing. I try to eat small healthy snacks all day so I won't be tempted to get something bigger. Keep crackers at your desk or eat fruit if you need something sweet. And of course drink plenty of water!!
  • I am morbidly obese and my OB didn't say anything to me about my weight at the first appointment.  While my Family Practitioner wanted my to lose quite a bit of weight before TTC [and mentioned surgery] she also made it clear that being fat and pregnant is okay, and I can have a very healthy pregnancy and gave her blessing.

  • Before pregnancy, I was 185lbs. Although I hold it well on my 5'7 frame, doc called me out at my 2nd appt, saying "instead of the normal 30-35 lbs, I only want you to gain 20."

    He didn't say I was high-risk, but I think he's trying to prevent me from getting gestational diabetes. I didn't think it was too harsh.

    BTW I think the combo of all the water I've been drinking with my m/s and food aversions, has made me drop a few lbs--I'm actually at 181 now. Go me!

  • Also, FWIW I've always been told that yes, eating healthy and exercising should continue once you get pregnant, but your focus should shift from trying to lose weight to caring for the new baby!

  • I am morbidly obese, and I am high risk, but the two things are not related.  It is perhaps one more thing they keep an eye on, but neither my normal OB nor my perinatologist have said one word about my weight (granted, I've been losing weight since bfp).  My blood pressure is excellent, my blood sugars are normal, I eat as well as morning sickness allows and I am not supposed to exercise (normal activity is ok for now which includes a fair amount of walking) beacuse of my particular situation.

    Weight alone should not be a factor for high-risk diagnosis, but there are things tied to weight that could push you into that status (blood pressure, blood sugar being primary).
