Nap Advice or Moral Support :)

My 2 year old hasn't napped in almost a week.  We have kept the routine the same, and I am pretty sure she is tired, but she doesn't fall asleep when I put her down.  We do leave her in her room for an hour to an hour and a half as long as she is not crying.  And she is wanting to go to bed around 6:30 as opposed to 7:30.

In your experience is this a phase or are we done with naps forever?

Re: Nap Advice or Moral Support :)

  • How is she when she doesn't get a nap?

I am having the same problem with mine as well. If she doesn't take a nap, she is really out of sorts, but she has been refusing them more days than not lately.

I'm looking forward to seeing some responses.

  • When my 2 year old won't go for a nap, I get a sippy of warm milk and a blankie and hold her on the couch with some cartoon on.  If she won't snuggle, she goes to bed.  But usually, she jumps at the invitation to have a snuggle session, and if I tickle her arm and face, she conks out.

Good luck!  No-nappers are a pain!

  • How many hrs does she sleep at night?  What time does she wake up in AM? You could try waking her up a little earlier to see if that helps her to nap later in the afternoon.  DD is still napping about 2 hrs but she has been waking up at 5-5:530 am!  I'm seriously considering dropping the nap to see if she will sleep later in the AM!  LOL.

  • As pp said, depends on how she's acting on the days she doesn't get a nap. By the sounds of it (going to bed an hour earlier), she might still need a nap. My 3-year-old doesn't nap some days, but most of the time, she's not very crabby and stays up till her normal bedtime, so I think she's getting ready to be done with naps. At 2, she definitely still needed her daily naps, but went through a couple of phases where she wouldn't nap/was difficult to put down. On those days, I'd stay in the room with her, sometimes lay down on the floor (sooo comfy!) and do whatever to get her to nap. This habit sticks though, so it was pretty hard to break it once she'd start napping a few weeks later.

    Good luck!

  • I just posted something similar yesterday. My guess in your case would be a phase. DS has gone through a couple periods of time where I was worried he was dropping naps, but he always seemed too crabby by the end of the day. I just rode it out on a day-to-day basis and it resolved itself and he started napping normally again every time.

  • My DS dropped his nap at 2 years, 4ish months.  He was just done.  He isn't super crabby in the afternoons and he begs to go to bed around 7.  Much easier at bedtime than he used to be.  He does occasionally fall asleep, and there was one month over the summer when he napped most days, but for the most part, a rest time and an early bedtime.  I would keep trying a rest time at nap time and see how it goes.  You should know soon if it is a phase.

  • Apparently all I needed to do was post this thread, because she slept for almost 2 hours yesterday!  She is definitely cranky when she doesn't get a nap, but I guess it will just be a hit or miss kind of thing for a while.

    Thanks ladies!
