Cloth Diapering

? & Vent

My ?: Is California baby diaper rash cream cd safe or should I be putting a flushable liner on him with it?

Vent: My MIL watches my son every Tuesday and every other Friday.. which is too much in my opinon. Anyways, we use Best Bottom diapers during the day and BG 4.0 at night.. When she changes a poopy diaper with the BB she always uses the cover over again.. even if it has poop on it!! She is a very sensitive women so I don't know how to tell her that she can't reuse it if it has poop on it. I mean, I didn't think that I had to spell that out.. Also, today she had taken the inserts out of the BG and had the cover there to reuse.. :/ She cloth diapered my husband and his sister.. I thought she would be the easy one to teach..

Anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this?

TIA

  • California Baby is listed as a 'cloth diaper safe' rash cream in many people's eyes.

It does contain zinc. And the majority of cloth diaperers will tell you that zinc is not safe for cloth diapers, which it usually is not - since it can cause buildup and repelling issues.

Some people use CABaby and have no problems; some people use CABaby and have repelling issues. So who the heck knows really, you will find such conflicting info about it. There are other rash creams out there that work better than it and don't risk any issues in my opinion, so I would just use a different one.

As for MIL and diapering, her being 'sensitive' is no reason for your child to be sitting in his own filth. The cloth diapers she used in her day are not the same as todays. You thought she would be an easy one to teach - but have you actually taught her? Maybe you should only give her one kind of diaper for the day; something easy to understand. Remind her to just use the BumGenius as is, no stuffing or unstuffing. Just toss the whole thing in the pail and get a new one every time. She probably just doesn't know.

Agree. I would just give her one type of diaper to use (preferably a pre-stuffed pocket or AIO just for these days when she watches the kids).  This is what I do w/my high-maintenance MIL and she's done great.

  • Loading the player...
  • Don't give her multiple options, it will just confuse her. Send only BGs, prestuffed, and say "Hey, just use a whole new diaper each time with this new style I sent today." If she doesn't get it, switch to AIOs.

  • CB cream is safe, but it does nothing for DD.

I don't care if she's "sensitive", I don't think a simple, "Please don't reuse the poopy covers" is going to get her knickers in a twist. Just tell her, in a nice way.

  • Thanks for the advice everyone..

Unfortunately, (or fortunately) no one knows my MIL here. She will get very defensive and probably go cry to poor FIL if I say anything to her, but it needs to be done. I think I am going to make DH do it. As far as her getting confused with the diapers, all she has to do is take the BG off and put it in the pail when DS gets up (I?ve told her this) and put a BB on him. I have taught her how to use the diapers and I have went over everything multiple times with her and she has told me that she understands. I am starting to think that she is doing stuff (there are other things besides the reusing poopy diapers) so I get upset with her and stop asking her to watch DS even though she cried for months to watch him by herself (suspicious if you ask me). One big thing everyone has to understand with her is she thinks that she is always right and that I am doing things all wrong since I had DS and it all started before we even left the hospital when she accused me of trying to have a premature baby (he was 3-1/2 weeks early)..

So I am going to have DH talk to her and just pray things get better, or she will not be watching him anymore, I need to do what is best for him.
