sewing class?

Does anyone know of a good starting out class in the Gwinnett area?

Re: sewing class?

  • If you find a local sewing machine store, not a chainstore but an actual sewig machine dealer, they tend to have classes for anyone who buys a machine, and charge slightly more if you already have one.  One I have heard of is Atlanta Sewing Center, here's a link:  https://www.atlantasewing.com/classes.asp

I don't know anything about them, though.  If you are willing to drive a little, Whipstitch Fabrics in Midtown has some great classes and they are a bit more modern than other places.

I second Atlanta Sewing Center.  I bought my sewing machine and my serger there, and I love their employees.  They are incredibly knowledgeable about sewing, so they can answer almost any question you can throw at them.  They teach a great beginning sewing series: Sew 101 - Sew 104.   I haven't taken that series but I've taken several others, and I've always been really pleased.

  • I'm in the beginner class at Whipstitch in Midtown - it's great!  A far drive for you, but maybe you can check out their weekend classes?

  • One thing I forgot.  I belong to the American Sewing Guild, and meet with my sewing group once a month.  I have learned SO MUCH from the ladies in my group who have been sewing for decades.  Anyway, there is a list of teachers on the ASG website.  Some individual classes might be the way to go.  https://www.asgatlanta.org/teachers.html

For me, the important thing would be that you start learning while making something you want to make, that you are interested in.  You don't have to start out making simple things you don't care about.  If you are bored with a teacher, call a different one!

I have had a few beginner sewing nights at my house.  I am NOT a teacher or qualified to instruct, but I can get someone through the basics and have managed to guide some beginners through some simple garments.  If you have any specific questions or want some pattern ideas, I can try to help with a little advice.  I mean, once you have the basics of your machine down, figuring out what patterns to tackle and are good to follow can be tough!
