That seems to be right about what I have heard from my pedi and what friends say. Remember, a "word" for a 2 year old is a sound they make for something repeatively so "ba" could be bottle or could be sheep but counts as a word.
My son had very few words at 2 and was in speech therapy now he is 3 he has too many words to count.
50 sounds to be about average... but normal ranges much lower and much higher. DD#1 no idea. She spoke a lot more than her friends in our play groups. (Now nearly 2 years later, the late bloomers and "average" talkers all chatter away pretty much the same.)
DD#2 had about 100 at 24 months.
DS had 8 words (or like pp said, consistent utterances that represented words) at 24 months. He has been in speech for 2 months.

Around 50 words and beginning to put 2 word phrases together, I think is average.
I'm a speech therapist... this is correct. Of course, like everything in development, there are perfectly normal children who develop language slower than this.
I'm not sure of the norms or averages. All I know is that based on pedi and DC, DD has advanced language skills for her age. She knows hundreds of words and is putting phrases together like mad. She talks all the time. I'm curious to see if DS will be the same way.

This is my DD as well. She speaks in sentences most of the time, just like DH and I.
My DS had at least 50 ... BUT... he still has a speech delay and qualified for EI because he wasn't using them spontaneously or combining words. He does now, after almost 2 months of therapy, but we still have a way to go.

I'd say this as well. B talks a ton, and most people think she is 3 or older because of her language skills. I'd say she probably know and uses over 300-400 words, but can pretty much sound out and say any word you ask her to. But according to our pedi, she is super advanced when it comes to language, and the average kid her age(she is about 26 months) has 50-75 words and can put a couple words together to make phrases. There is really such a large range of what is normal when it comes to kids this age.
He had 40 at 18 months, then I stopped keeping track. If I had to guess, maybe a couple hundred? He's started using simple phrases the last couple of weeks, too.
DD has 60-80 words that she uses without my prompting. She will say anything I ask her to say though. She is not really making many 2-word phrases yet with still a few weeks to go till her 2nd bday.
It seems like she is average compared to others in her playgroup that are the same age. Some are talking in full sentences, and others have just a handful of words.

My kids each had about 400-500 words by the time they turned 2.
My pedi said they look for 50-200 by age 2.
