color blind?

My 2.5 year old can name every primary color except for blue and my DH is starting to worry. When we point to blue and ask him what color it is, he responds with, "ummmmmm, is it green?" When we show him green he confidently answers that its green. I don't know much about color blindness and from what I know, neither one of us has it in our family. Maybe he just doesn't know the color blue? Anyone have experience with this?

Re: color blind?

  • DS really struggled with blue, but one day he just got it.  I would give him time.

Color blindness usually involves confusing red and green, so it's unlikely that blue would be the issue. I do understand, though, because when she was learning them, she had some she got consistently wrong. She still gets a few random ones wrong, but not consistent. Hers was orange.

There are ~6 different kinds of color blindness. Red/green is the most common. My dh is colorblind but we don't know in to what category he falls.  Now that ds is learning his colors, dh is starting to question what colors he himself really knows and "sees".

Yup, which is why I used the word "usually".  Wink

ETA:  Also, several of the different types of color blindness result in red-green color discrimination weakness, to varying degrees.  Blue/yellow or total color blindness are much less common.

I know you are smart so I had no doubt that you probably already knew about colorblindness. I have never said this before but your little girl is very cute.

  • I am starting to question this with DD as well. DH is color blind and DD is having a really hard time with colors. She picks up everything so easily, but she is struggling with all colors, no matter the repetition. Hoping my Dr. can answer some questions at her next check-up. GL!
