Babies on the Brain

Having a baby while living in a small place.

Was talking with my FH last night .. he's almost 31.. we live in a 1 bedroom condo (560 sq.ft) which we paid $155,000 less than a year ago. One of the other units just sold for $159,900 and another is now for sale for $162,000. So they are still going up in value. With the market slowing in Canada we were talking about having a family and when we can sell. We discussed possibly staying in the condo for as long as we can and having our first baby in the condo. We do have room in our bedroom for a crib and change table so that wouldn't be a big problem. We just don't want to rush into buying a big place and then I go on maternity leave for a year and lose half my salary and then struggle to pay the bills when we can comfortably afford our place now. I am just wondering if any of you have or would consider having a child while living in a small place.

Re: Having a baby while living in a small place.

  • One of my friends had a baby while they were in a one bedroom apartment, and they did just fine. I'm sure if you are still there when you have a baby that you'd be able to make things work out just the way you need them to.

  • It's possible. As long as you are comfortable with everyone in one room then you're set. Families living in small apartments/condos are really common in New York and other big cities in the states and they handle it just fine. Good luck!
  • yep. I don't see the problem. people have families in small places all the time. you might feel a little cramped, but you'll adjust (probably).

  • sure, why not.  i think it's better to have a bb in a small place that you can afford than to have a bb in a big ass house that you can't afford and then you end up homeless with a newborn.
  • As long as you are comfortable with it, then it shouldn't matter.

  • People have made do with much less for centuries. If I was comfortable there, I'd stay there.

  • I wish my companies maternity leave was for a year!  Thats awesome!  However, I have baby fever so bad at this point I could raise it in a cracker box and be ok :)
  • Yes, DH and I live in a 1 bed/bath its 1000 sq.ft. We plan on living there until the child is 5 or so and then we will build again, so that it will have it's own bedroom... It can be done, some of our friends are in the same situation and their little boy is 3, now.
  • Its possible if you want it to be!  Best of luck to you!

In Canada we get a 17 weeks matternity leave and 35 weeks parental leave.  It was just changed a few years ago.  I just wish my company topped up our pay, we only get 55% of our salary from the government, but it's not taxed as much I hear so it turns out to be a bit more.

  • you and me are in the same boat.. but i am actually 30weeks pregnant.. we live in a 550sqft apartment and getting a house sometime next summer (august?).. we feel that a baby doesn't really take THAT much room up. but for the last three weeks i have been moving crap out (we got a storage unit to store a lot of our unwanted or unused stuff, it's only $25 extra a month) to make room for our baby. we plan on having him sleep with us in our bedroom for the first year anyway since i plan on breast feeding so he doesn't really need his own room.. i had to downsize my clothes so i could make room for the baby's clothes. but it wasn't so bad really. it's just hard trying to find enough room without it being too cluttered in our apartment. i am finally almost finished getting things organized and spaced out and to be honest we have more room now than we did before i started cleaning and storing stuff lol. it's very possible just takes a lot of thinking and organization skills.

I don't think it's her company.  I think it's Canada.  I am so jealous.  A year would be sooo nice.  ::sigh::

    No joke!

  • I live in a one bedroom apt and if we were to get pregnent right now I think we would be ok. We want to move too and are looking at places but I wouldn't worry about it to much. If you can make it work, then stay where you are.

  • I think what is making me question it is that I grew up in a small town where housing prices weren't that high and now living in a big city they are so expensive and everyone that comes to my place says how small it is so it makes me self-conscious about how small it is and if I would get slack from people for not waiting till we had a bigger place.. I know I shouldn't care what people think but I think about it.

  • As long as you guys are comfortable there I see no problem.  I had friends who had 3 kids under the age of 5 in a 2 bedroom apartment with maybe 650 sq ft or so.  They managed just fine.
