Cloth Diapering

Potty training?

What have you guys done as you got to the potty training stage?  Cloth seems to be a pretty expensive solution for a system that you should only need for a short time (the ones I've seen are 15-20 per diaper).  But, I can see definite advantages to cloth, like that LO knows when he's wet.  I have no idea how many trainers we'd even need for a day.  We need 5-6 diapers per day at this point, but it seems like you'd need less trainers because hopefully the number of accidents would be minimal?

Thoughts?

Re: Potty training?

  • DD went straight from diapers to underwear. I didn't see the point of doing training pants. I used disposable pullups on one trip and she just treated them like diapers. Nor did she seem bothered by feeling wet when she was in non-stay-dry cloth diapers.

I'll probably do the same for DS. I do a lot of nakey time with him right now and he's good about using the potty when he's naked, not so good if he has ANYTHING on his bottom (even underwear). So, again, no point to training pants.

  • We also went straight from diapers to underwear (and 3 days of naked at home in between!). I think that the argument for the child feeling wet in the cloth diaper, first of all isn't true for all diapers, and secondly, they're used to it already so it has no bearing on some kids.

  • Any of you have kids in daycare?

I really know absolutely nothing about potty training (yet) and I'm not sure if daycare's going to be too keen on going straight to underwear.  Maybe we could do a long weekend at home and then just send him to daycare in underwear after that :)

Yes, she goes to daycare/preschool full-time. Her preschool was wonderful helping with PT'ing. They were actually the ones who suggested sending DD in underwear. She had tons and tons of accidents for the first 3-4 weeks, to the point where I was about to give up and go back to diapers. Literally, she came home some days with 5 pairs of wet underwear in her bag. The only thing that kept me going was that her teachers didn't seem discouraged in the least -- and I figured they had a lot more experience with it than I did. Lo and behold, after a few weeks, it finally "clicked," and she did great after that.

To be clear... I did start working on potty usage at home, but she was in diapers (or underwear, or naked) for that. No training pants. It was probably about two months later that I switched her into underwear full-time. So it's not like she went from full-time diapers to full-time underwear (at preschool!) overnight, BUT the point is, I didn't use training pants during the transition period. There was no need, and in fact, I think it would have hindered her progress.

  • I'd just go to regular underwear.     Training pants just seem too much like diapers to be useful for potty training.
  • I tried fitteds with the soaker out of them, but it was a pita.  We ended up going straight to undies.  She's in daycare and they preferred that she be in undies, rather than pull ups, etc.  We just took a wetbag and a lot of extra clothes.  She was trained at school before she was at home.
