Multiples

Intro & NT Scan question...

Hi ladies! Happy to be joining you and have already learned so much from just lurking! Quick background...this is our 2nd pregnancy, 1st was an early m/c and then the next cycle we got pregnant and at our 6w1d u/s we found out it was spontaneous twins. I think I'm just now getting over the shock :)

I've had morning sickness since 6w and have already gone to the hospital once for dehydration. I'm on 2 zofran's every 8 hours and also on reglan (since yesterday), and had my first good day, meaning I only threw up once :) I'm hoping I'm one of those that gets better after the 1st Tri cause I'm not sure how much longer I can do this. It's affecting my work and home life. Luckily my H and mom have taken over all the chores around here!

Now on to my question...My doctor hadn't ordered an NT scan and so when I went in to see him Monday for my follow up after my ER visit we asked. He said they don't do first trimester screenings for multiples. Is that right? I don't know anyone who has had twins and haven't researched it myself yet so wanted to know your thoughts please!

I look forward to getting to know you ladies better :)

Re: Intro & NT Scan question...

  • They absolutely do NT scans for twins.  The bloodwork is generally not thought to be conclusive, but they can do the neck measurement and it's a great opportunity to get a good look at the babies.
  • They absolutely do NT scans for multiples. Find yourself a Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist or Perinatologist ASAP. Like PP said, the blood work is not as reliable but the neck measurements and nasal bone measurements provide a great screening tool.

Congrats on the twins and good luck! I had awful morning sickness as well and thought it would never end (it did around 15-16 weeks) The zofran was a lifesaver!

  • Congrats x2! You sound like me with the m/s, so sorry you're so miserable so far! We definitely did the the NT scan with twins. It was at 12 weeks along. The only real difference between a singleton NT and a twin NT (according to the u/s tech) was it takes a little longer with twins since you're measuring 2 babies. Not sure why they're saying you don't get one since you're having multiples. I'd see what their thought process is. GL and H&H 9 months to you!

  • We had one for our twins. If you want one done, make sure to get it scheduled soon. If your OB won't do it, ask for a referral to a perinatologist or MFM. You have from 11 weeks until 13 weeks 6 days to have it done.

  • Congrats on your twins!  Hopefully you start to feel better soon.

They definitely do NT scans.  I had mine at 12 weeks.  It is the bloodwork that usually goes with the NT scan that can be off when there are multiples so that is why some doctor's won't do the blood draw and just do the scan..

  • They definitely do an NT scan with twins.  We did one, including the bloodwork.  Congrats, and I hope your morning sickness subsides soon!  Mine didn't go away until 18 weeks, but then one day it literally just disappeared, and now it's a distant memory.  Good luck!

  • I'm just a little bit ahead of you, and my doc did the NT scan at 12 weeks. They told me that they only do the testing for downs and not the others because of the tests not being as accurate with multiples. HTH
