Baby Names

parents make me laugh with their names....try this at home :)

soooo this week I thought I'd do a drive by of our DS name we picked with my parents...meaning drop it into a group of names as potentials, even though we're pretty set on it.  I mentioned Alexander, Jonah, Samuel, Elijah, etc.  The name we like is Eli/Elijah.  My parents both said 'no" to Eli.  So after naming a few more names, I told them it was up to them to come up with a name.  And I present to you their suggestions:

Harry

Joseph (um mom..that is DH's brother's name)

Abraham

Steve

Kevin

Dustin (I have a cousin named Justin and his son is Austyn..not gonna hapen)

Garrett

and the list went on and on.  It honestly gave me a huge sigh of relief.  The parents who said "eh/no" to my pick...I would NEVER pick any of their suggestions!!! ever!  I was laughing so hard throughout the whole thing. (no offense if any you have DS' with those names, they just do not go well with our last name/meaning, etc.)

I hope this gives you a cheer up for those who have been having hard time getting aprpoval from others! Ask what their suggestions are...am I'm POSITIVE you'll feel better about your choice! :)

  • hehehe, my mom always suggested Kevin to me when I was pregnant with DS#2.  She would just say things like "I've always thought Kevin was a very nice name".  I agree that it was nice, especially in 1982, but come on mom, if you loved it so much why didn't name my brother Kevin?

  • I totally get what you mean..  I could tell my Mother and MIL didn't love DD's name when I first mentioned it but then when I heard their suggestions I felt much much better! lol  They were toally not anywhere near our style     Now they love her name Wink
  • I take it a step further. If someone doesn't like my names, I just automatically assume they have terrible taste...I don't even need to ask for suggestions.Saying you don't like my list is the exact same as suggesting Jamison or Mackenzie in my mind.

Guess I'm just that snobby about my choices!

  • I love my MIL, but she's been a pill with baby names. She obviously came around to the girls' names, but keeps tossing out SUPER trendy names for hypothetical child #3.  She's in love with Addison, Madeline, Isabella, names like that. I like older names (um, hello Eleanor?) and to her chagrin, DH and I are already set on hypothetical third child names so phooey to her I guess. Smile

  • My MIL keeps suggesting Troy.  "What about Troy?"  "I always liked Troy."

Well, you had two boys, should have used it I guess! ;)

Our list includes Landon, Henry, and William.

She's going to hate whichever one we pick, I am certain.

  • My mom doesn't know it yet, but I found out from my SIL that my favourite girl name of all time (Claire) was going to be one of my sister's names!

She chose Evelyn instead (which is equally fashionable right now despite how many people kept telling her it was an "old lady name"). My mom has good taste but succumbed to two major 80's trends (Meghan and Jessica for me and one of my other sisters).

  • this is why we kept the name a secret with DS... I didn't even want to hear other ppl's suggestions. My son's name is Elijah Graham. It was THE ONLY name hubs and I agreed on. There is NO way to get the whole family/friends to agree. So why stress.

Ugh, and the snotty comments people make when you tell them your child's name before they are born, if they don't like it. After the child's born, they just have to smile and say what a cute baby

  • I got a lot of crap for naming my last child Henry. Everyone, from my mother, MIL, grandma, dad, brothers, etc etc etc, ALL made fun of it. But now, here he is, 6 years old, and I'll be damned if he isn't a "Henry" through and through!

I am not going to bother telling anyone the names for our latest LO. It helps that I am not exactly on speaking terms with most of my family! ( trying to think positive here, K?) Especially bcuz the older generations seem to prefer popular modern names, and Hubby and I prefer old fashioned and meaningful names :)

My advice - try 'em all out. Stick with the ones YOU can imagine saying every single day, whispering, yelling, scolding, crying, writing down on paperwork, introducing to people, teaching your child to spell. That's what matters. As far as I know, no  one has been completely disowned bcuz other don't like their name!

  • My mom seems to automatically HATE every name I say we like.  She recently found out that somewhere way back there was a surname of Reagan in our family. (This is really odd to me because this is the first I am hearing of us having any Irish in the family tree.) She is now determined that we will use Reagan if we have a girl.  I actually don't mind the name, but I am not letting her name my child.

We are horrible about keeping secrets, but I think we might have to keep the name from our family.  :(
