Extra Folate?

I've read on several boards that some ladies are taking extra folic acid and I'm wondering why?  I'm high risk due to a clotting disorder, and someone said I should be taking extra, but I don't see the Dr. until Tuesday at 5w4d.  Just curious...

Re: Extra Folate?

  • It depends on your clotting disorder.  Women with MTHFR don't absorb folate and other b vitamins properly.  Consequently, part of their treatment is to take extra B vitamins.

Regardless, you should be talking a prenatal vitamin with 800 mcg or more of folate (according to my OB).

IVF #6:  (New RE):  Long Antagonist November 2014 (transferred two 8 cell grade 1 embryos and froze one blast) = BFN

    FET#1:  BFN

  • I have MTHFR - body doesn't absorb folic acid so I basically have to take an elephant dose of it in a special vitamin B combo to help with absorption.  No big whoop.

  • It really only has to do with having MTHFR, which is a blood clotting disorder but it different than most of the others out there.  MTHFR causes your body to not absorb folate correctly (it is a gene mutation that doesn't allow your body to convert folic acid into folate).  If you don't have it, I wouldn't worry....I haven't heard of any of the other blood clotting disorders having to do with folic acid.

  • That makes sense, thanks ladies.  I have Prothrombin 2 mutation so I'll just stick with the prenatal and talk to the Dr. on Tuesday.
  • I would definitely ask your doctor, I have a blood disorder and am taking 1200 mcg of folic acid daily.  It's just good for your red blood cell production.
