Success after IF

*MrsReem or Skimmy*

OK, I think I'm going to start trying to make the baby food today or tomorrow. Do you buy fresh or frozen veggies/fruits? If it's frozen, can you buy frozen organic? And can you or can you not make your own carrots? My pedi gave me a handout that specified not to, but on wholesomebabyfoods it seemed to sound like it's OK. Right now, she's only eating carrots and that's gone OK so we'll probably try peas or sweet potatoes in a few days. It's OK to use steamer bags to steam the veggies, right? We have a steamer but it seems to take a long time to cook stuff.

Re: *MrsReem or Skimmy*

  • Mrs. Reem and Davez have been doing this way longer than me!! I've only made a few things but I'll tell you what I've done.

sweet potatoes- super easy!!! wash- poke with fork- wrap in foil- bake at 400 (? I think that's what I did) for 55 minutes (it was a big potato) then once it's cool enough to touch peel the skin off... cut into small pieces and throw into food processor. May need to add a liquid- BM, water or formula- your choice.

    avacado- just mushed up

acorn squash- I washed the outside cut in half- scooped out the guts put cut part down in 1 inch of water in a corningware dish and baked... I don't remember how long or at what temp- google it. cut into pieces then used food processor with a liquid.

green beans- I used a steam bag. I got a bunch on clearance and hadn't ever used one. LOVE IT! (oh yeah cut ends off before) then put them in processor with liquid... over cook these they are hard to puree I found.

    banana- just mushed up.

I skipped carrots..... I got confused with the rules so I will do them at some point but I think I'll buy organic. I tried to find frozen peas but they all had salt in the ingredients. So I don't know what to do about peas.... I really don't want to pick peas out of the pod.

ok I don't have advice really but I use Super Baby Foods book and wholesomebabyfood.com and Mrs.Reem as references!!! lol

It's been fun!!! I know everyone says this is easy but I will probably skip meats- kinda grosses me out to mush up chicken etc. But we'll see!

HTH- I'm sure Mrs.Reem will have more advice... but she doesn't like to give her opinion- she's too nice and will tell you you can't go wrong. lol

  • What? I am not nice. Who are you talking about? lol  ;)

I try first to buy fresh organic, but in Iowa sometimes its not practical to get everything fresh as we get closer to winter, so then I do frozen. (Never canned unless its pumpkin which is fine.)

You can find organic frozen fruits and veggies. I'll look up the brand names when I get home.

I do not make my own carrots. I'm freaked out about the nitrates so that's the one and only thing that I buy Gerber or Earths best organic. Some say organic carrots don't have the nitrates but I'm too cautious.

Peas and beans don't puree as well but Katen never minded the added texture. Some babies might though. Sweet potatoes are nice and easy and they puree really well like others have said.

I generally use the microwave steam bags for steaming so that I don't have to use water. I made sure they were safe at high temps by doing a little research and I felt reassured that they're fine. No leaching, etc.

    Have fun!!!!
