talk me down!

My family is supposed to spend the evening with a family we are friends with tonight.  They have 3 kids, all older than ours and my DH works with their DH.  I've been talking with her about how we want to try for #3, she's given me advice and told me about how having 3 is different than 2, etc.  I went to girls night with her and some ladies about a week ago (ordered wine but didn't drink it and she gave me a "look")  I know it will come up tonight at dinner...What do I do?!

I haven't even told my mom yet, I want to wait until after our 8 week appointment to tell family and then slowly tell close friends after 12 weeks. 

Help me think of ways to distract and lie without actually lying...I don't want to lie.

You can always use the "I have a UTI and am on antibiotics" excuse... that or be the designated driver for the night??  

I will order a drink but then make my DH drink it when noone is looking :-P

Ive just been saying that "We've been trying for a while and I've read some books that say that drinking can effect your fertility, so I want to try a whole cycle with non booze, even if its not true...its worth a try!"

Its worked for me!

you could order a vodka tonic and then excuse yourself to the bathroom and tell the waiter to bring a soda water with lime. None of my friends ever give me a side eye if I don't drink so that's about all I can come up with.

I drank extremely watered down coke at a tailgate.

That's a great idea!  It explains why you're not drinking and dismisses any thought that you may be pg. 

If it's a dinner party and she asks you directly, just say you're "working on it" or "you guys are hoping for a baby very soon."  Neither is technically a lie.

Here's what I did with #1 when I had to pretend to drink.  Can you drink a beer instead?  It's easier because then they can't see your progress.   I just would pretend to take sips from the bottle and then when no one was looking dumped a little out (or you could go to the bathroom to do it) so then it looked like I was drinking a more empty beer.    After pretend drinking one beer you can get away with turning down wine at dinner because everyone will already think that they saw you drink.

 This is my strategy tonight too! That and the designated driver excuse I'd also add that if you're with a group you don't have to share this with everyone if you're not comfortable, by telling a close friend or two you'll have someone on your side to help fight any pressure when you turn down a drink.
