Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Specialist question (toddler ticker as well)

Hello All,

I'm going through my second consecutive MC right now.  For those of you with recurrent PG loss, did you go to an RE or keep going with your OBGYN?  I feel like I should go to a RE (not only RPL but over 35 also) but I don't know what the norm is.  I'll be talking to my Dr. soon about this but wanted to see what you guys said about this.

Re: Specialist question (toddler ticker as well)

  • I'm sticking with my OB(3 losses, 2 consecutive), but I have a really good relationship with the 3 providers in the group and I'm in my 20s.  If you feel like you should go to a RE, then you should at least have a consultation with one, even if you don't go any further than that.  It will at least prevent you from feeling like "what if".  Good luck and I'm sorry you're dealing with this :(

  • I'm on my third consecutive and I changed doctors, but she is still an ObGyn. I have a follow up appointment Thursday, so we will see what she suggests for me. It never hurts to ask questions. Good luck. :)

  • I'm doing both. After my second loss my OB offered to refer me to a RE and I told him I would think about it. My OB ordered some RPL blood work on me but after talking to some other people who have had the same testing done by a RE, there were additional tests they had done that my OB didn't order. We did find out the cause of my most recent loss (Down Syndrome) and all of my blood work came back normal, but I still feel like I should at least do a consult to make sure I've covered my bases.

  • RE. For sure.  It's a personal choice, but I talked to my old RE a lot via email (se's out of state now) and when I told her what happened (2nd miscarriage- lost at 19 weeks ; first miscarriage was 4 weeks prior to having my DS who is now almost 3), she told me to go back to the RE and have them run a pregnancy loss panel.  Personally,  I felt like my OB was not specialized enough to follow me as I would have liked to have been followed.  I'm not sure that there would have been any way to prevent what happened to me this time around and it's been devastating but I will no longer wonder.. I will ASK and I will demand the treatment that I think I should have.

Going back to RE on 10/28 for testing.

  • Thank you ladies so much.  I will ask about an RE (have to be referred) on Monday.  I feel the same as far as my OB not being specialized enough.  He's a great guy but he's the first to tell you he's not a specialist.  We want to try for another baby but my conscious can't let us try without figuring out what's wrong first.  I can get pg easily it seems but can't stay that way.  I don't trust my body anymore.  Both MC had no symptoms and my body just keeps on with pg symptoms.  I feel very defeated now and I want the big guns!

  • This is probably a really, really dumb question, but what is an RE?

  • i think you should do whatever makes you and your husband most comfortable...

i am 30, had 2 mc, 1st @9wk4d, 2nd @ 9wk...my obgyn did extensive blookwork after the 1st mc (everything came back normal) & had genetic/pathology testing after both d&c's...my husband & i just completed our chromosome/genetic testing, i am going to have a sonohysterogram & i am scheduled w/an RE @ NYU Fertility Center...for my husband and I, being agressive makes us feel better...we want to do anything and everything to avoid another mc & have a healthy baby

but everyone is different and i really do think this is a personal decision...im so sorry we have to be in this situation, its devastating!  best of luck & i hope we all have healthy babies soon
