Kindergarten moms

What is your DC learning so far this year? Are they able to recongize and write all the letters upper/lower case? Do they know what sounds they make? Are they already learning to add/subtract? Just trying to see what we DS will be learning next year or should already know at 4.5

Re: Kindergarten moms

  • Ethan could do all of that before K. I check his folder daily, but I can't remember which letters I've seen. I'm sure they've gone through all of the letters, but he's known them for 2 years so I'm not concerned about that. Do do math, but it's still counting at this point. They're really focusing on control of the pencil--tracing lines and letters and shapes without wobbling. His handwriting has improved a LOT so far.

  • DS went into K knowing all the letters and their sounds, he could already add and subtract and he reads really well, too, so the first few weeks were kinda dull and mostly a review. We're on our 6th week and I've noticed more things that are focusing on handwriting, and math and science concepts. They also started bringing home Guided Readers last week. They've started working with themes for the units, too. Like this week all their lessons revolved around apples. They made different apple art projects, learned about Johnny Appleseed, they learned sequential order of how an apple is eaten, basically they incorporated apples into everything, lol. Even though DS knew a lot going into K, there is such a wide range of knowledge with the kids so I wouldn't get too concerned with what your DS needs to know. I think it doesn't hurt to be able to recognize all the letters and their sounds, but if he doesn't quite get it at the beginning of K that's ok, too.

  • My DS could already do the letters and their sounds and could read some small words, but they didn't really work on adding and subtracting much at his preschool. He's picking that stuff up FAST, though. He's constantly telling me "blank + blank equals blank." His school is learning German, so he knows how to count to 20 in German now, the days of the week, and a few other words. They have weekly spelling tests for 3-5 words and that's going pretty well, as well as learning 4-5 sight words per week.

  • I'm pretty frustrated because most of the homework DD has brought home involves concepts we covered years ago.  Counting, number recognition, writing, and of course, for testing purposes, they practice filling in little circles.  Ugh.  Thankfully, DD's teacher knows she's beyond this and has already tried to give (additional!) homework that is more up her alley.  DD doesnt mind doing homework yet, so that's another blessing.  If you're paying attention to skills your child is ready to learn now, your DS won't be behind at all, but may be ahead of the game, which is the better option, IMHO!  GL!

  • There's writing and tracing letters and numbers. Talking about letter sounds. Starting a few sight words. So far, it seems to be a repeat or review of 4K.
