Re: temper tantrums...HELP!!!

  • Just out of curiosity, do you tell her ahead of time what you're going to do and what behavior you would like to see from her and talk about what you're going to do when you're done shopping?

  • Well maybe she needs to stay home from the store for a little while. Have someone watch her while you go alone.

As far as store trips I keep  them short and in a good time frame for her, such as the morning because she does the best then. I will make sure she is well rested, fed and content. The store I frequent has carts with cars, she likes that I push it along and sing or say "vroom vroom beep beep." I make it fun. I also keep a snack/drink handy or even let  her play with a toy in the store (warning on that one if you can't sneak it away) Otherwise I have her watched when I go clothes shopping or know I need to really shop, because she doesn't enjoy that so I get grandma or dad to watch her at home where she is happier.

  • I tell mine before going in what kind of behavior I want to see from her and what the consequences are before we even get out of the car. So far we've only had one meltdown which resulted in a trip to the family restroom, timeout and then apologies to every cashier there. Sounds harsh but she hasn't even attempted to whine/throw a fit since now that she knows a.)whether she likes it or not we're there for a reason and will not be leaving b. throwing a tantrum makes HER look silly and she will be held accountable for that behavior. I'm of the mindeset that they have to learn to deal with "boring" situations and the sooner the better. I'm not going to stop doind my errands simply because she doesn't want to behave. However I do make a point to reward "big girl" behavior at the store which is usually a piece of candy or a sticker and she always looks forward to that.

  • Ditto to PPs. I tell DS what we are going to do, what I need him to do, etc.

I also usually bring a snack along. It helps.
