I had my full exam last week at 12 weeks and they did some blood work. well the nurse just called and she said my thyroid was off and to come back for more tests... i'm healthy and my weight is always consistent. does anyone knows what this means?
You may either by hypothyroid, or hyperthyroid. That just means that your thyroid gland is either not producing enough hormones, or producing too much. It has nothing to do with how healthy you are. Most of the time it is genetic and you can't prevent it. I have hypothyroidism, and I take a hormone replacement medication which keeps my thyroid hormones at the level they are supposed to be. It's a good thing that they caught this for you if it is indeed hypo or hyperthyroid because your thyroid is something you need to make sure to keep an eye on during pregnancy. If you are either of those, you will need to get used to getting blood work done about every 6 months to get your levels checked to make sure they are balanced. It's nothing horrific, it's just something that needs to be monitored.
Ditto the above reply. I have a thyroid issue- was on meds first pregnancy. No need to panic at all. Good to catch "off" levels early. If it is off with low numbers (like less than .1) that is actually better because it means plenty of thyroid hormone for baby. If it is off high, like above 3 ish, they may give you some thyroid hormone to replace what you aren't getting yourself right now. Either way, again, not a huge deal as long as it is caught early. With my crazy levels they already checked it twice and will check again in 6 weeks and again in December. My endocrinologist that monitors my thyroid levels said by the 3rd trimester the baby is producing its own thyroid hormone, so not as big of a deal. And, since it was probably pregnancy induced for you- you will probably go back to normal post partum. My issue actually got a lot better in the first pregnancy and allowed me to come off meds half way through. They are off again now, but I expected it. Good luck! If you have any more thyroid questions- feel free to ask me.
Oh, and I am very healthy, low weight, low blood pressure, no other issues- just a thyroid non-cancerous nodule that acts up sometimes. I know a lot of people relate thyroid with obesity- but there are lots of other symptoms etc.
