we got a kids aero bed from amazon for that exact reason! i highly recommend it, DS LOVES it. it inflates in less than a minute and comes with a nice soft cover. we used it camping, and while traveling to friends and relatives homes.
we got it from amazon, for $60. the price fluctuates up to $79, so if you don't need it right away, maybe you can keep checking on it to see if it goes down.
A fellow nestie suggested this and LOVE it: regalo toddler travel cot. You can find it at Wal-Mart tucked in with all the baby stuff (I found it on the bottom shelf). It's a whopping $25 and light-weight and easily tucked into our larger suitcase. I did bring a water-proof pad and sheet as I thought the sheet that came with it was scratchy. A crib sheet will do the trick (be a bit big). I also used the blanket I let DD take on the plane as her cover and she used her pillow pet as a pillow. Done! We have joked about swapping out her bed for the cot because she (and DS) both slept so well in that thing.
