Thanks Michelle and Karin for sharing on here about Smith's birth, and thanks for all the well wishes both here and on facebook. We are all doing well, just adjusting to life with a newborn again!
Smith Patrick was born on 9/22 at 5:55 pm. I had an OB appt the day before, and was 4.5 cm dilated but not having consistent contractions. So she wanted me to come in the next day to see how I was progressing and potentially go to L&D to have them break my water.
Thursday morning I was having some contractions, but still not consistent or very intense. That morning I had some bleeding when I woke up though, so she went ahead and sent me to the hospital. I was 5 cm when I checked in at 11:30, and by 1 pm I was 6.5. She broke my water, and I immediately progressed to 7 cm, and I finally started having contractions.
They still weren't very strong or consistent, so she started me on a very small dose of pitocin to try and get a pattern going. About 1-2 hours later I was 8.5 cm, and I went ahead and asked for the epidural, even though the pain was still manageable (I didn't want to miss my chance!).
I think I had the perfect epi because I still felt every contraction, just not the pain. And I could still pick up my legs and move around. At 5:45 she checked me and I was ready to go. 4 contractions and 10 minutes later, Smith was born! She said because of the position of his head, my water probably wouldn't have broken until it was time to push, so I may not have made it to the hospital - eek!
He is a big boy - 8 lbs 13 oz and 20.5 inches long. Caroline is in love, and pretty much just wants to be with him all the time. The first time she saw me nursing, she asked what I was doing, and I told her that I was feeding the baby. She said "You're feeding the baby from your heart?" So so sweet :-)
