games at a 2 year old's party?

I know I have months before DD's birthday, but I was starting to think about it today and I'm curious - do people usually have some sort of structured games or activities at two year old parties?  I don't think DD would be able to follow traditional party games yet, but would they be bored with just coming over to hang out?  (Or, more importantly, will it be too chaotic to have a bunch of two year olds in our house in the middle of winter with no "plan"?)

What have other people done?

  • You may want to ask the 24+ month board, as they will have experience with it more recently.

For a two year old bday party, I plan on inviting maybe 3-4 other two year olds. It's like a glorified playdate. Most two year olds wont follow most games, their attention spans are pretty short. But you could have activities on hand in case. For my dd1's 2nd bday, we had a coloring and stickers and the train our and 1 game. The kids played, or colored and right before cupcakes we played the game bc they needed some redirection (there was a sqwabble over toys)

The game we played was a matching game. I had made two of each kind of bug, big paper cut outs I had colored and glittered, aka lady bug, butterfly, worm, spider, snail, etc. I put one of each bug on the floor, then one at a time I handed a bug to a kid and had them go pick up the matching bug. It worked well. It was a game I saw dd play in the toddler room in daycare.

  • I'm planning on having some kind of craft that the parents can help their kids with.  I am thinking about doing puppets.  I'll make people shaped puppets out of felt and then the kids can glue on clothes, hair, and facial features.

  • We did an alphabet theme party for dd.  I had alphabet bean bags and set up a little thing that they could toss in.  It was just set out, not structured.  Some kids played with it more than other.

I also had a table with construction paper and crayons and foam sticker letters that kids could play with.  Again, not structured, but some kids colored on their own and some kid's parents helped them with the coloring and letters.

I had brought chalk and bubbles too, but it was chilly and windy that day, so I never put them out.
