April 2012 Moms

Snot and Saliva

This may be TMI but I just wanted to ask bumpies if they are experiencing the same or similar thing.

My sinuses and nose is always blocked or running and I never seem to have enough saliva in my mouth and I always have a dry mouth. Not exactly the preggy symptoms on the most desirable list. Its so annoying.

If people are experiencing this...Remedies???

  • My OB said that normally we would have WAY more mucus, and that if my allergies are especially bad then not to worry - that we become more inflamed from the pregnancy hormones.  So if you are normally stuffy - that it would be waaay worse.

I am not sure about your mouth though.  I have turned into a saliva factory!  Maybe you need more water?  Or what about getting some hard candies to suck on to initiate more saliva?

  • The post nasal drip is awful!  For me it was definitely worse last pregnancy, but I think that was because I was newly pregnant in the spring.  I think its responsible for at least 50% of my nausea.  It eventually lightened up, but there wasn't much I could do about it until that happened!

  • I had read someplace that we have the same tissue in our noses as we do in our... vaginas. So everything around the uterus is swollen, including that tissue in our vaginas. So the body has that same tissue swell in our noses/nasal passages making for a stuffy nose. I'm not sure where I read it but thought it was really interesting. And drink lots of water for that dry mouth or look for quenchers like lemon water. I heard that works well!

This is me, if I didn't have the post nasal drip I don't think I would had any nausea.

  • I'm having the same exact problem - I just keep a cup of ice water near me at all times... and I haven't figured out what to do about the blocked nose - I've even broken down and used the netti pot, but AC at night seems to help a bit...

  • I am loaded with mucus day and night.  With DS's pregnancy, same thing.  In fact, I get so much mucus that it starts to drip from the heat and steam when I shower and makes me gag through my whole shower.  With DS's pregnancy it was worse than this time.  With him I literally threw up nightly after showering.  For me, nothing helped.  I did try to not eat sugary stuff that would stick in my throat and make it worse, like soda, sucking on candy, etc...  When it's so bad that I can't sleep I take a benedryl.  Other than that, I just grin and bear it and be thankful to be pregnant at all.
