If I'm "high risk....."

Why am I not getting another ultrasound until 23 weeks? I read about ladies here having more. If I ask, would the Dr do one? I mean, I go every 2 weeks for bp and weight. Why not anything else if I'm at risk? I'm gonna ask for one to get scheduled at my next appt.

  • It all depends on why you're high risk and on the doc themselves.

I am "high risk" for BP issues.  I go every two week for BP checks, urine samples, and weight checks.  Until they had my meds regulated, I was going every week.  I have had only 1 ultrasound for date check at 6 weeks, and 1 at 9 weeks due to spotting.  At my last appointment with the OB (11w2d) - they did a portable ultrasound/doppler to check the heartbeat and appropriate growth.

I won't get another ultrasound until the anatomy scan (18-22 weeks), I think.  I don't know if they do an NT scan before the blood work results are in.  I am going to ask at my appointment on Friday.

you have to talk to your OB...and high risk dr (perinatologist assuming you have one).  I have an incompetent cervix and am high risk.  Not sure what would categorize you high risk to have more frequent monitoring.  If it is the low progesterone I would assume they would check your blood/progesterone level...not via u/s and I will use myself as an example that I need to have my cervix measured via u/s if that makes sense.

  • I was high risk last pregnancy and this one.  With DS I had an u/s at 6w, 13w (NT scan), 20w anatomy, 26w, 28w, 30w, 32w and weekly after that.  I was considered high-risk by MFM who did my anatomy scan due to PCOS and weight.  I did end up developing GD at 28w.  They were doing scans every other week to see how big he was getting and then every week since he was over 6 lbs at 32 weeks.  The MFM was the one pushing for the u/s.  My OB only did the 6 weeks and the weekly ones along with the twice a week NSTs and appts.

With this pregnancy I imagine when I see MFM on Wednesday they will pick me back up since I still have PCOS and I still am overweight, AND I had GD last time with a 10 lb baby.  My OB was actually stating I was low-risk until I reminded them GD, 10 lb baby, and a c/s.  The OB stated the next ultrasound would be the anatomy scan and then only if there are problems. I've had two u/s so far.  My dating u/s was too early so I had another one a week later.  I go for my NT scan on Wednesday.  I doubt I'll have another one before my anatomy scan like last time but then will probably see them every 4-6 weeks.

Again I think it depends on why you are high-risk. Good luck.

I don't think this is something they'd really check for via u/s, more blood work, ect.

  • That does make sense devious. I haven't done blood work to check my progesterone either though. I guess becausr i havent had any complications they havent felt the need. But something would make me feel better. I don't worry as much as I used to, but its still there.

  • Usually the High risk for low prog. only lasts for the first 10-12ish weeks.  Once the placenta takes it, it becomes responsible for producing the progesterone vs. the corpus luteum prior to that!  So, hopefully, you are only high risk for a tiny bit longer. Also, progesterone would be checked through b/w alone.

  • I'm high risk and don't get my first ultrasound until between 18 and 22 weeks.  I have more appointments with my Dr but not more ultrasounds (as of now anyway, that could all change after my first u/s).
  • Like others said, I guess they could just make sure things are going okay through bloodwork and then listening to the hb with a doppler once that was possible. I've had several ultrasounds, but it's just because I've had spotting.

I agree.  As long as they can find a hb with the doppler, they probably don't need to do an ultrasound.

  • Does your doctors office have U/S machines in the office? If not, and they have to send you somewhere, then maybe that might be the reason. Do you see a high risk doctor too? (peri).

I'm consider High Risk too, had pre-e last pregnancy. But for this pregnancy they are just going to monitor me closer, come in for more appointments.
