Hi ladies, I usually lurk, but just noticed people saying Harper is trendy now? Where did this come from? My DH and I have loved this name for a boy since before we got married (him from a movie, me because of Harper Lee). When we agreed on it, we liked it because it is classic but uncommon. Our first child was a girl, so we went with Kendall (which seems to be gaining in popularity, ughhh). We decided to name this one Harper, whether its a boy or a girl, but now I'm torn because it's becoming trendy!
Do you ladies think this is just popular within a certain region or something, because I hate trendy names! I'm a Jessica, born in 83! I've never been in any group setting without multiple Jessica's present.
Re: Hello and a question
If you don't want it to be popular move to Canada..
I'm pretty sure no Canadians would ever name their daughter Harper
Speaking as a Canadian.. I don't see the appeal.. specially seeing our PrimeMinister is Steven Harper
I ran a lot of literary names by DH during my first pregnancy, but Harper is the only one he liked. We've been referring the this unborn baby as Harper ever since we found out that the Kendall was a girl (oh, DS Harper will be next) so it seems weird to pick another name, even if this baby is a girl. I've only known Harper Lee, so it seems like a girl name to me.
This
This although I didn't know it was unisex. Now that I do- This exactly.
Social Security shows popularity by state for names:
https://ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/state/index.html
check out the baby name voyager (sorry I can't link...it comes up first on google though)...it graphs popularity of names over the past 100 years. If a name has been flat for most of the century and seen a sharp increase in the past five years or so, I consider it trendy.
Harper follows this trend. It's not overly popular though and I definitely don't think it's going to be a top ten name, ever....so I wouldn't put it on par with Jessica in the 80's exactly...but I also wouldn't use it if you don't like trendy names.
Also, it's popular for girls.
