Boiling bottles, paci's, etc

So I was boiling my bottles, pump parts, and pacifiers as called for by the packaging of these products before use....

After taking out the stuff a lot of it had a dry chalky film on it.  I did a hot water rinse and it still seems to be there.... is this normal?  Now I'm concerned that the stuff isn't sanitized properly.

Anyone else experience this when prepping these things?

  • I just sanitized everything in the dishwasher.

  • Nope, sorry - but FWIW, the lactation consultant/nurse who did my breastfeeding class recommended using the microwave steam bags made by Medela for nipples, pump parts, and pacifiers... She said they worked well for sanitizing.  I think I'm going to do my bottles in the dishwasher.

  • Well I just spoke with my mom and she said it was probably from minerals in the water (hard water I guess) and that the stuff is sanitized and it's not a big deal.  It's just annoying me because it doesn't look clean!

  • This happened to me as well.  After boiling everything, I ran it through the sanitize cycle on my dishwasher and it came off.

  • Your mom is right, it is probably just minerals from your water.

For example, when I water bath can my home made goods, I always notice a white chalky substance on the top of the lids- its mineral build up. Totally normal.

I would just re-run your items through a dishwasher if you have one avaiable. If not, adding a tablespoon of vinegar to your boiling water ususally stops the mineral buildup.

Same with me.  The tap water here has a lot of calcium/lime in the water, so can leave a residue.  Not sure where you live, but is that a possibility?

  • stupid question - so,now that you have sanitized everything - where are you going to keep them? arent they going to get dirty again?

My bottles are supposed to be boiled before first use and then washed with soap and water.  so if I boil today, then can I just soap and water the day before use?

I am such an overthinking planner crazy person

I looooved these bags for DD. I didn't breastfeed but they were awesome to sanitize nipples and pacifiers one a week or whenever. I honestly used 1 box the whole first year. You can use each bag 20 times I believe.

  • I did everything in my Avent microwave sterilizer.
We have very hard water and most everything has a slight white film to it - but I know they are clean.
