Interesting question

FI was asking if you can get a tattoo when you're pregnant.  My initial answer was no but when he asked why I didn't have an answer. Tongue Tied  Anyone know?

  • Technically, yes.  But you're always at risk for infection so I wouldn't.  I've asked tattooer friends if they'd tattoo a pregnant woman and they said no, for that reason.

  • I don't know. Are you thinking about it?

  • No, No, No....you are at a much higher risk for infection and unless you trust the tattoo artist or shop completely, you are also at a higher risk for blood-born pathogens like Hep B and C.  (which is the reason that you are not allowed to donate blood within 12 months of a piercing or tattoo)

I wasn't interested in doing one while pregnant b/c it just didn't seem like a good idea but I want one after the baby is born that says "(insert baby name) was here" on my stomach in little kid writing.  FI and I have a few already and I was going to get another one before I got my BFP.  But FI wanted to get symbolic tattooes when we get married so that's why he was asking.

  • I dont know a techincal answer but personally I would NOT chance it. Getting a tattoo you are always at risk for infection, why risk that on baby, too? Just my opinion though!
  • My shop will not pierce or tattoo pregnant women. In fact, you have to sign saying you are not. One little nitwit was trying to get a Marilyn when I got my memorial tattoo recently and confided in her friends that she was 6 weeks along in the back and the piercer overheard her and refused her business. She was obviously under the influence as well. Sad situation.

  • I read that you shouldn't in one of my books. Most likely my What to Expect. It said even though the risk for you is low the risk of the baby getting infection is high.

I agree with this completely.  Took the words right out of my mouth.  This is pretty much what my pregnancy book told me.

  • Your body is already working SO hard to grow a person inside you, so recovering from a tattoo is the last priority your body is gonna have. It will take a lot longer to heal, giving you a higher risk for infection, and the hormones you have right now are so different, there is a very high chance that your skin will not take the color very well. It's kinda the same thing with coloring your hair while pregnant, hoe sometimes the hair changes from the original color because of the hormones. I wouldn't risk it.
