3rd Trimester

What diapers to use for newborn?

Here's a question for you.  I've registered for some diapers, but I'm afraid of registering for the small ones.  Is it better to wait and see how big you baby is at birth and then send someone out for small diapers?  And what kind of disposables are you going to use for you your brand new child?  I'd like to cloth diaper eventually, but probably not for the first few weeks and not when I'm out of the house or traveling alot.  What are you ladies stocking up on for newborn diapers.  How many, how big etc?

Re: What diapers to use for newborn?

  • I have a couple of packages of newborns, and a couple of 1's.  But I have the receipts for everything, so if I need to exchange, I can.

  • I'm not sure diapers is the best thing to stock up on before you know the size of your baby and which ones you like.
  • I didn't register for diapers at all, but got a 100 count, and two 40 count Pampers Swaddler's in newborn size from my baby's shower.  So if you are having a shower you may end up with diapers anyway. If it were up to me, I would have just bought one pack of newborn size until I knew for sure how long he would wear them.

  • I have 1 96 count box of Pamper Swaddlers in NB size and 1 box of 216 count Swaddlers size 1. I guess I will wait and see if I need more NB size once he is born.

  • I was given a bunch of size 1 at the shower, so I went out and bought one value box of the newborn size.  A friend of mine works for Childrens Hospital in Boston, and she says to use size one.  They are more likely to fit and you can fold them down until the belly button falls off.

I bought the one box of newborn just in case she is small when born.

  • I've heard pampers are the best for newborns.
I give up trying to add my kids' photos. Just know that they are adorable.
  • Cloth wise, prefolds (GM has the best sizing) and KLO seem to be most popular for newborns (covers:prowraps). Disposables, I wanna say I've heard good things about Pamper's Swaddlers.
  • Here's the thing:

It's hard to know how big your baby will really be.

Most hospitals will give you a pack or two to tide you over until you can pick up diapers. I'd recommend stocking up on size 1 and 2 (we used pampers swaddlers ... they were awesome) and then waiting to see.

You may need newborn size but you might not. My sister's baby gained three pounds her first month and is already out of the newborn size ... but my son was in newborn for two months +.

(A good tip ... stock up now on gift cards instead of diapers. Like, every time you go to Target, buy a $20 gift card when you purchase whatever else you are getting. That way, you can whip out a GC and buy diapers when you need them, versus wondering if you are overstocking on a size now)

  • I asked many friends about this and they said to buy some newborn sized diapers. I bought a case of Huggies Gentle Care. They fit babies up to ten pounds, so even if the baby is on the big side, it is likely he or she will still fit into the NB size.
  • also ...

BF'ed newborns tend to go through 8-10 diapers a day in the beginning. Usually a poop every time BF'ing. So use that calculation when figuring out how many to buy.

(currently, at age 2, we're doing around 4 diapers a day, varying by how often DS poops, etc.)

  • I would have just one pkg of newborn on hand, and tape the receipt to it in case your baby is really big.  I always just buy those as we go.  My kids were good sized newborns (around 8 lb each), but both stayed in nb diapers for 5-7 wks b/c they weren't fast growers.  Who knows if this baby will be different, though.  I use Wal Mart's White Cloud or Parent's Choice and have never had a problem.  If I wanted to spend more $$ on diapers, I liked Huggies for dd and Pampers for ds, though.
  • Pampers Swaddlers - Newborn size-  when he first comes home!
  • I'm planning on cloth diapering my newborn, but I did get one package of Pampers Swaddlers until the meconium has passed.
  • We've gotten some size 1 diapers at the shower that we already had.  Unless we get some NB size diapers at our shower this weekend or at my work shower, I think I will buy one box and then we'll get more as needed.
  • i bought one thing of newborns (92 count) and then a couple cases of size 1.

  • Pampers swaddlers newborns were perfect for about 2 weeks (12 diapers per day X 2 weeks = about 168 diapers) with my DS, then we moved to size 1's.  It's best to have a mix of sizes... you never know when you will have to move to the next size.  It goes by so fast!!
  • A friend of mine swears by Pampers Swaddlers, but I never liked them much with DS.  I loved Luvs though.  They will be my first choice with this DS.  I have 1 pack each of newborn and Size 1.  I don't really want to stock up on any because I don't want to have to worry about returning any and doing so within the returns deadline, so I will just send DH out to get a few packs when / before we come home from the hospital.
  • I plan on CDing as well, but for the first few days or weeks until we get into the swing of things, we will use the Earth's Best diapers from BRU simply because they are chlorine free and all that jazz. I will only be buying size 1s, unless after the baby is born she is actually smaller than I expect she will be. Babies in my family are rarily smaller than 8 lbs. =)
