I know it's early, but 3D/4D ultrasounds?

We still have quite a few weeks to go before we can, but DH and I were thinking about doing a 3D ultrasound to detect gender at 15 or 16 weeks.  We won't be getting a regular ultrasound from our OB until were about 21 or 22 weeks, and we're too excited to wait that long.  Anyone else considering this?  It seems pretty accurate; I've known quite a few people who have gotten it and their gender results were right.  Just curious...

  • Our high risk OB did it for us (for free...not technically supposed to but the techs were very nice to us) We did the 4D which I recommend better than 3D that I had w/DD.  they do not like to do it early on because well babies look kind of funky that little....features and not a lot of fat on their body. Its a catch 22 because later on the space is crammed and it is hard to get a good shot...DS loved covering his face with his hands so we had to poke him around a bit but we got some beautiful shots of his face.

  • It's very tempting because we can't wait to find out the gender, but we won't be getting one. It's just one more expense we don't need right now.

  • I don't know if I will get a 3D or 4D u/s, they kinda creep me out.  Little gold babies look really freaky to me, I think I'll just stick to the regular u/s.

  • We will definitely be doing one.. but probably not until the 25 week range..

  • DH haven't discussed it yet, but I don't think I want to do one. We are having a regular gender u/s at about 19 weeks, and I honestly find most of those 3D u/s pics to look a bit creepy!

  • I was thinking about having one done later one.  There is actually a program here at the local community college and you can get one done for free if you agree to being the guinea pig.  I just don't know if I like the idea of an entire class watching during the whole thing but if it's free I guess you can't complain!

I agree, now that we're having the NT scan and then the anatomy scan, I think I'll be good with that.  The 3D pics kind of freak me out a bit--they look like the baby is melting or something.  Just not my thing, but it is cool for people who want it!

  • We are planning on doing a 3D/4D ultrasound at 18 weeks and another one after 28 weeks.  It's about $225 total, but I think it's worth it.

  • My 1st ultrasound at 8weeks (first appointment) we got to see the little dude/dudette with 2D AND 3D!!! It was really neat because although it is hard to see the head/face (because it's still forming) I could see the little leg and foot and the arm and hands as well as the little chubby tummy.  It was awful cute :)

  • I had brushed it off thinking it was too pricey, but this post made me curious enough to google places nearby, and they're much more reasonable than I'd expected.

The place closest to me offers a 3D gender package starting at week 16 for $55 and ~$80 for the basic 4D package ($109 with a 20% off coupon).  I think I'm going to do it!

The site I was just on explained that 3D is a still image while 4D is a video.  I guess movement is the fourth dimension?

  • We're definetly doing it!! The place near us does it at 14wks for gender, we have our appointment Oct 22nd and I can't wait!!! I know a lot of people think it's creepy, but I think it's so amazing and love watching my little baby moving around on the screen. Plus we were team green up until 27wks with DD so i'm making up for waiting so long last time, LOL.

  • I never had much interest in it, but then DH saw a picture of one and got really excited about it.  I think if our OB offers them, we'll do it, but I'd prefer not to go out of my way for it.

I think this is what we're doing, both so we can find out gender first and then try and catch a glimpse of LO's face :)  It's interesting to see all the different responses.  Although it can be slightly creepy early one, because I feel like they look more like a pineapple gummy bear than anything, haha, I think it's exciting nonetheless.  And it is a little cheaper than I thought too, which is why I think we've both been set on it.

  • DH and I definitely want to do this.  Probably around 24 weeks or so.
  • We are going to get one at 15 weeks, very anxious to determine the sex so I can start shopping.  I know they have package deals so you can go back when your further along to see the facial features clearer.
  • Nope. Not doing one this time. Only did it with DD3 because DH was deployed.
