Toddler Beds

My twins will be 2 in December. They obviously share a room and one of them can climb out and the other can't. DH and I have been contemplating on when we should change their cribs to the toddler bed conversion and if we even should if one can get out and the other can't. Jaxson, the climber, did it for the first time about 2 months ago and for 3 days straight he climbed out. Since then, he has tried a few times unsuccessfully and fell out just once. I understand I should protect him but what about Jayce? He's not showing signs of wanting or trying to figure out how to climb out. Can I just switch one bed and not the other?

Any advice as how we could handle this and also, when did everybody switch their toddlers cribs to 'big boy' beds?

Re: Toddler Beds

  • I switched both when Nathan started climbing out.  Even though Ry couldn't do it yet, she's the type to get mad if her brother gets something she doesn't.  Other than a few minor issues in the beginning (like laying at the door and yelling for me for a few minutes, and trying to play leap frog instead of napping for a couple days), we didn't have any issues with the switch.  If anything, getting them to sleep actually became easier than when they were in the cribs.

If you just want to switch the climber, then try that.  Either way, you should do something about that ASAP.  It wouldn't take much for his foot or pajamas to get stuck while climbing out, and cause him to fall on his head and/or neck.  The second time that Nathan tried to climb out, this is what happened, and luckily I walked in the room as he was hanging there head first and got to him before he could fall.  I switched their beds right then.

And I have no idea when we'll switch them to bigger beds, but it probably won't be until they're 4 or 5, just because of the fact that we'll be moving when DH gets out of the Army, and for at least a few months we'll be staying in a house my parents own that only has one tiny second bedroom.  Two twin beds won't fit in it and still leave room for anything else, so they'll stay in their toddler beds for that time.

  • I had planned to wait until they were 2 years to switch them, but DD1 had other plans and started climbing out a couple days ago. I went ahead and switched both to the toddler beds (with rails) and they have done extremely well! I was debating on just switching one, but some of my MoM friends said do both and I am glad I did.

    Good luck!

  • My girls will be 2 in January and I am in the EXACT same position. I decided against the crib tents. I know my girls will hate them. I ordered the safety rail for the toddler beds. They arrive tomorrow. My plan is to transition them both. Evelyn is not climbing but the thought of her sitting in a crib while her sister gets a "big girl" bed and freedom really bothers me. I figured it's best to get them both transitioned at once. I'll let you know how it goes after tomorrow night.
