April 2012 Moms

Who is the Dr. going to side with?

I hit a plum yesterday! I'm 12 weeks and 1 day!

Okay, so I've lost 12lbs in the last 5 weeks (I've mentioned this before) and everyone (random people, not professionals) was saying that I'm fine, but then I read in What to Expect that I should have only lost 2-3lbs and that if I've lost any more, my baby could be premature. I was having a bad day that day, anyway, so I got all worried (along with many other things - why can't I get comfortable? Why do I only want Vitamin Water? Why am I up at 6am? Ect...) I don't normally like to read WTE, but I was up at 6am...lol I told DH and now he's all mad that I'm not eating. (I am, but you all know how the morning sickness appetite goes) So he wants me to drink a high calorie Ensure every day. I don't think I really need to worrying, but DH thinks otherwise.

I have my 12 week appt Wednesday morning and we'll ask the Dr. about this. Is she going to side with DH or think I don't need to worry?

  • Unless you are underweight to begin with you are fine.

  • I wasn't. I was slightly overweight, nothing bad, though. I'm figuring that the Dr. will say that I'm fine, but I'm just waiting for the appt to hear her say that. hehe

  • I lost about 14 pounds in my first trimester with my son.  OB was not concerned.  As long as you are eating something and drinking water, dont worry - your appetite will come back.

  • I imagine it is ok as long as you are taking your vitamin and eating and drinking lots of fluid. Let us know what the OB says.

  • I lost 10 lbs during the first 12 weeks with my first, and I'm fairly thin to begin with. I understand how worried you are--I was a basket case about it. I went on to gain 50 pounds during second and third tri, and my daughter was born the day before her due date. The odds are overwhelming that you and your baby will be fine!

  • Honestly it all depends. Depends on the doc, depends on baby's growth and depends on your pre-pregnancy weight.   I was slightly over weight to begin with (like 10lbs) so if I lost 12lbs already they'd be concerned (even if baby was growing right on target)  but I have a friend that's a bit more over weight and during her pregnancy with twins she managed to lose some weight here and there and in the end only gained 4lbs, the docs had no issues and baby's were over 6lbs each at birth (born at 38-39wks).

  • I lost 10 lbs the first tri with my first.  I gained it all back and then some.  He was only born 2 days early.  I think that most women are ok and WTE is unnecessarily alarmist.

  • #1 -Throw away your What to Expect book...it's crap and I absolutely hate that this book is pushed on pregnant women. Go buy Your Pregnancy Week by Week by Glade B. Curtis and Judith Schuler. It goes weekly through your pregnancy and is more accurate, less alarmist and packed with useful info...my husband even read this without eye-rolling.

#2 - I have always had mild HG with each pregnancy...and I have always lost between 10 and 15 lbs in my first tri and gained it all back and then some. My HG had nothing to do with the loss of my 2nd DD. Despite her cord accident, she was perfect, and so was DD#1. As long as your OB is not concerned, you don't worry.

  • I lost 10 lbs 1st tri with DD and they told me it was normal - I was normal weight the start of that pregnancy. I ended up gaining plenty the other 2 trimesters. They did recommend breakfast shakes if food didn't sound good or protein bars, but I was actually eating fairly normally. That's just how my body reacted to the HCG. I've only lost 5 this time, but I think that's because I was focused on eating 2000 a day since I was nursing DD as well.

  • I wouldn't worry, as long as your drinking and taking your vitamins. My mom had severe m/s with all 4 of us and always lost weight in the begining. The docs used to tell her not to worry because the baby is like a parasite, lol, it takes what it needs regardless :) keep us posted!

  • in my case, I was a little overweight to begin with.  I am 6'1" and wear a size 14... so I was about 15 pounds over ideal weight

I have lost 11 pounds since I found out.  My doctor is not worried at all.  She says that as long as I am not throwing up all food and liquid for over 24 hours, the baby is still getting what baby needs.  She did say once we get into the 2nd trimester I shouldn't be dropping weight anymore,,, So we will reevaluate in about 4 weeks...

Also... My doctor told me to throw away "what to expect..."  I am a very anxious person due to a past loss and that book made me crazy... My nerves did get a little better once I stopped reading it! Confused
