Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Almost crawling, but not sitting up on his own?

I am new posting to the 6-9 month board as DS just turned the big 1/2 over the weekend :) Saturday night, DH and I really thought DS was going to start crawling. He was up on his hands and knees and was rocking back and forth like crazy, so much that he scooted himself forward and looked at us like "whoa! I didn't know I could do that!". However, when we sit him on his own, he topples over immediately. We practice a little every day, and we haven't seen him gain any stability.

I know babies all develop at their own speeds, however I was always under the impression that babies typically sat up on their own before they started crawling.... Anyone else in the same boat?

Re: Almost crawling, but not sitting up on his own?

  • DS was crawling before he could sit up. He actually started sitting up on his own about oh.. a week after he started crawling? It just happened over night. Now he can actually pull himself up (while grabbing onto stuff) and stand up fully.

  • Yeah, we are kind of in the same boat.  LO gets up on all fours and scoots forward over and over until she gets where she wants to be.  She's been doing this for almost a month. She just started sitting up on her own, like last week, for a few seconds at a time.  Every day she gets better. She's kind of developing these two skills together.

  • Our LO is 9 1/2 months. She Army Crawls, and can sit on her own, can stand if holding onto something, but can't go from a crawl to a sit.

Its funny how every baby does their own thing. I swear she doesn't crawl on all 4s because she wouldn't be able to carrying things with her.
