I saw the plum post below (congrats ladies!) and how they are now in 2nd tri...I had heard though that the 2nd tri doesn't officially start until 13 weeks (meaning the 1st tri is considered through your 12th week)?
So I am just curious what everyone considers the beginning of the 2nd tri? I will be 12 weeks (and a plum - yay!) tomorrow so I would of course love to be in the 2nd tri a week earlier than I thought, but based on everything I've heard so far, I feel like I have to technically wait a week.
Re: Not to rain on anyone's parade... (2nd tri question)
Interesting that some sources say it starts at week 14...I had never heard that one. Also interesting that different sources have such different opinions.
I think I am going to go with my original assumption that it (officially) starts at week 13 since I was using that as my cut-off to be able to announce on FB! ;-)
Each trimester is 93 1/3 days. (the average pregnancy is 280 days) so that comes to 13 1/3 weeks.
If people go by 9 months of pregnancy (which is an odd number. I have no idea where that came from, because it's actually 10 months!) then 12 weeks is 3 months and thus the end of the first trimester. It also coincides with when most women start feeling their symptoms ease up, so it makes sense to draw a line there.
This is what I thought.
I thought the ticker changed at the start of the new week? Eg when it turns over to Week 12, you're at the beginning of week 12, not the end?
Anyway...I used to think it was annoying that pg friends always told me how far along they were in weeks instead of months, since no one thinks that way normally. Now I realize that it's the least confusing way to count it...and it's still totally confusing! I think I will start saying I'm in 2nd tri as soon as I stop feeling like crap.
But if you're going by the same numbers as those who calculate 3 months as 12 weeks, then 40 weeks would be 10 months. I guess I did react more in my first post. I DO know where that number comes from. It just doesn't make sense that if you measure a trimester as 12 weeks, you would still only be pregnant for 9 months. Just explaining that, numerically, that is illogical.
If you want to get technical, 2nd Tri doesn't officially start until 13 weeks 3 days. 3rd Tri starts at 26 weeks 6 days. By taking 40 and dividing it by 3, that's what you get.
Honestly, it doesn't make that much of a difference. It's not like you magically start feeling better at 12 weeks vs 13 weeks. lol
It's all personal preference I guess. I'll be saying that I start 2nd Tri at 13 weeks.
Here's a neat little link to a calculator that will tell you when everything ends and begins.

This is what I go by. Pregnancy is not 3 sets of 12 weeks because that only equals 36 weeks.
13.3x3=39.9, which is about as close to 40 as you can get evenly.
40 Weeks / 3 trimesters = 13 weeks 3 days.
That's when 2nd tri begins.
