Not to rain on anyone's parade... (2nd tri question)

I saw the plum post below (congrats ladies!) and how they are now in 2nd tri...I had heard though that the 2nd tri doesn't officially start until 13 weeks (meaning the 1st tri is considered through your 12th week)?

So I am just curious what everyone considers the beginning of the 2nd tri?  I will be 12 weeks (and a plum - yay!) tomorrow so I would of course love to be in the 2nd tri a week earlier than I thought, but based on everything I've heard so far, I feel like I have to technically wait a week.

  • "What to Expect When Your Expecting" and they have listed that the first trimester ends on the 13th week and the 2nd begins on the 14th week..
  • Loading the player...
  • As far as I can tell from everything I have read, second tri begins once week 12 is completed.  So, technically, the first day of week 13.  I might be completely wrong though.
  • There seem to be three popular ways, and I think it really doesn't matter which you/your doctor use. (1) First tri ends on the last day of week 12. So when your ticker says 12 weeks, you're in second tri. (2) Divide 40 weeks/3 and you get 13 1/3. So at 13 weeks and 2 or 3 days, you're in second tri. (3) First tri ends on the last day of week 13, so when your ticker says "14 weeks", you're in second tri. I use #2, but like I said, whatever blows your hair back... :)

  • I think of it as 14 weeks, but anywhere from 12-14 doesn't bother me.

  • My OB said I was second tri when I start week 14.. :( But I will be 12 weeks tomorrow.. :) I'd much rather be second tri then lol

  • Interesting that some sources say it starts at week 14...I had never heard that one.  Also interesting that different sources have such different opinions.

I think I am going to go with my original assumption that it (officially) starts at week 13 since I was using that as my cut-off to be able to announce on FB!  ;-)

  • Each trimester is 93 1/3 days. (the average pregnancy is 280 days) so that comes to 13 1/3 weeks.

If people go by 9 months of pregnancy (which is an odd number. I have no idea where that came from, because it's actually 10 months!) then 12 weeks is 3 months and thus the end of the first trimester. It also coincides with when most women start feeling their symptoms ease up, so it makes sense to draw a line there.

FYI 40 weeks == 10dpo months. Some months have 5 weeks or 4 1/2 weeks which brings 40 weeks to 9 months. Plus, technically you are not even pregnant for the first 2 weeks of your pregnancy so its really only 38 weeks.

I thought the ticker changed at the start of the new week? Eg when it turns over to Week 12, you're at the beginning of week 12, not the end?

Anyway...I used to think it was annoying that pg friends always told me how far along they were in weeks instead of months, since no one thinks that way normally. Now I realize that it's the least confusing way to count it...and it's still totally confusing! I think I will start saying I'm in 2nd tri as soon as I stop feeling like crap.

But if you're going by the same numbers as those who calculate 3 months as 12 weeks, then 40 weeks would be 10 months. I guess I did react more in my first post. I DO know where that number comes from. It just doesn't make sense that if you measure a trimester as 12 weeks, you would still only be pregnant for 9 months. Just explaining that, numerically, that is illogical.

  • If you want to get technical, 2nd Tri doesn't officially start until 13 weeks 3 days.  3rd Tri starts at 26 weeks 6 days.  By taking 40 and dividing it by 3, that's what you get.

Honestly, it doesn't make that much of a difference.  It's not like you magically start feeling better at 12 weeks vs 13 weeks.  lol  :)  It's all personal preference I guess.  I'll be saying that I start 2nd Tri at 13 weeks.

  • Here's a neat little link to a calculator that will tell you when everything ends and begins.

    This is what I thought.

This is what I go by. Pregnancy is not 3 sets of 12 weeks because that only equals 36 weeks.

13.3x3=39.9, which is about as close to 40 as you can get evenly.

  • 40 Weeks / 3 trimesters = 13 weeks 3 days.

     That's when 2nd tri begins.

  • You are starting the 13th week when you're 12 weeks pregnant. My Mayo Clinic book counts that as the beginning of the 2nd tri.

  • It seems funny that something so basic is still somewhat undefined.  And then everything referencing m/c, announcing suggestions, etc is by trimester -- what week do they mean!!  How confusing.  Of course we're all a little obsessed with it early on and in the big picture it doesnt really matter cos the peanut will be born when it's ready.

  • I don't really think I'm in 2nd tri yet.  I'm going with 13w3d...not that it really matters, I guess.
