Poll about deli meat

Truthfully what is your stance on deli meat? Last pregnancy I completely avoided it but not sure what I will do this time around.[Poll]

Re: Poll about deli meat

  • I try to avoid it all together, but if we go somewhere and that's the only thing to eat I will have some, but won't fill up on it.

  • I'll eat it if it's cooked (microwave, etc.)  I know the chances of getting sick from it are small, but I'm not taking any risks.

  • So far I am completely avoiding.  There's nothing that grosses me out more than nuked lunchmeat, so that's out completely, and while I don't truly believe that I am at a real risk or listeria, I worked too damned hard on this to risk it over a piece of turkey.  It's only 9 months and then I can go back to eating whatever whenever... seems like a pretty small compromise to me.

  • I'll eat it whenever I want. The thing I don't understand about avoiding it during pregnancy or heating it up during pregnancy is the fact that people feed their kids lunch meat all the time and from what I can tell don't heat it up. Are our children no longer important enough for this to be an issue after they are born?
i wish i could be joking but my dad is the music teacher at a church so he owuld be mad. we had sex, all the time how bad i know but we dont want to wait and he said GREAT OH KAY! and I was really feeling the wets? down there- too embarsed to say- but he acted like man.

This is my sentiment exactly . If I want a club sandwich I'm just going to eat it. I asked a few of my doctor friends and they said if you get the sandwich from somewhere like Subway or a nice deli it's goingnto be fresh properly stored lunch meat...they said just look out for anythingthat looksnstrange in color , is slimy or smells strange . My mom had never even heard of this or the soft cheese thing and goes " good grief it's a complete world of no now for pregnant gals....wasn't like this when I hadnyou and your brother!".

Funny you say this cus I was thinking the same thing!  Why would I feed my kids lunch meat but not eat it because I'm pregnant?!  I haven't felt like eating lunch meat but its not because of the risk.  There was no rule to stay away from it during my last pregnancies, and most likely I will eat everything in moderation and try and stay clear from junk.  I'm not going to freak out about this, chances are small.   I'm not saying its not real, but really?!  Doesn't all food have risks?

  • You can get listeria from eating raw vegetables and fruit too...Are we not supposed to have salads and munch on carrot sticks? Just sayin'......

  • I'm not a huge lunch meat eater and I don't really plan to eat it except this wednesday we're going to eat at a really yummy deli that's been around for ages and I'll probably partake of a sandwich called The Godmother.  It's pretty awesome.

  • My george foreman is back out. I just make panini-like sandwiches and heat it really well. I only buy high-quality deli meat but I still do that. I would never microwave the meat and then put it on a sandwich. yuck!

  • I completely understand people feeling like its not that big of a risk but I thought I would chime in that the reason why its okay to feed to your kid lunch meat but not recommended for pregnant women is due to your reduced immune response.  When pregnant, you get sick easier because your immune system has been suppressed so it doesn't reject the baby. This is why pregnant women are first in line for flu shots and why some women with auto immune disorders see a decrease in symptoms during pregnancy.  There is a logic behind the recommendation!

  • It was one of the few restrictions my OB gave me - to only eat lunch meat that's been heated up (either microwaved or toasted) so that's what I'm doing.  I also don't eat a ton of lunch meat anyway so I'm not missing it or anything.

  • I tend to listen to what my OB says, she told me to avoid it and if I absolutely had to have a deli sandwich that I needed to heat up the meat until it was steaming. I don't need it that bad.

  • My OB said no worries on lunch meat, as long as it looked/smelled okay.  Then again, we celebrated this BFP with sushi, so I guess I'm wacky that way.
