C-sections

C-Section & Anemia

I was diagnosed with Anemia at the beginning of my pregnancy, my levels are usually around 7.9-10.2.  I'm on an OTC iron supplement 2x's a day. I see a hematologist every 2 weeks, but she said I most likely won't have an issue.

This is my first pregnancy and I'm scared, because I know I will have a c-section and I realize that I will most likely lose a lot of blood during surgery.

Did any of you ladies deal with anemia and have a c-section? Did it effect you or the baby/babies?  Did you need a blood transfusion?

Re: C-Section & Anemia

  • I am always borderline anemic, and the prenatals were enough to keep me from becoming anemic during my pregnancy.  But with my c section, again I was lucky and didn't lose a lot of blood.  I did become anemic, but my levels were okay again quickly .

  • This is my 3rd pregnancy and 3rd c-section with anemia. I never had any issues with the anemia and my pregnancies. Just had to take an iron pill along with my prenatals. The only affect it had on me, was that i was more tired than but once i started the extra iron i was fine. I never affected my babies and i've never need a blood transfusion. I've actually had a very minimal blood lose with my previous 2 c-sections.

  • I didn't have any complications and my iron levels were so up and down my whole pregnancy. I did require more stitches on the right side of the incision because it was bleeding so much more than the left. It left me slightly more sore on the right than the left, but the procedure went well and so is the recovery. I wish you the best of luck and I hope everything goes smoothly for you!

  • i was anemic with my DD and had to take an iron pill everyday--my Dr kept me on them for 6 weeks after i had her and then i was fine.  my Dr. explained it that the baby takes what it needs from you--it is you that needs the supplement, LO will be fine.  and i have been fine this pregnancy, no need for the pills.

  • I was also anemic during my pregnancy and had no issues with blood loss during my c-section.

    Same as well.

I was anemic afterward so I was prescribed iron pills to take after my c/s. I took them for roughly 1 month.

  • I was anemic before and during pregnancy. I took my iron pills and had no issues.

I did have a complication during surgery (giant blood vessel covering my uterus) and lost twice as much blood as I should have. They kept the IV in longer than usual in case I need a transfusion, but I didn't. I felt great, and the loss of blood/anemia never really bothered me. I was still up and walking the night of my surgery, although I did take it easy.

I was terrified and things went much smoother than I anticipated. Good luck!

  • I was anemic during my pregnancy and admit I didnt take my iron supplements regularly. They didnt have any complications during the surgery but a few hours later I passed out because of loss of blood. I ended up with a blood transfusion and two bags of blood. Honestly, other than being scary, it wasnt a big deal. My body started to go into shock and my blood pressure tanked but the nurses acted fast and got me back around. My doctor never said it was due to the anemia he just said I lost too much blood during surgery. I did have to take more iron after my surger and keep up a high iron diet. I looked really bad for months after having the surgery. I looked really pail and sickly. Although I felt fine. My advice would be to pay attention to your body after the surgery. If you start feeling faint dont hesitate to call the nurse.
  • Thank you all so much!!!  It makes me feel a lot better you all got through it without any major/invasive issues.  Thank you again!!!

  • I became anemic after delivery. It was pretty bad that the doctors came close to giving me a transfusion. But in the end it wasn't needed because they were closely monitoring me after they gave me iron pills. I was told to take the iron pills at home, in addition to prenatals. I hear it's quite common. But at that time it can be very scary!

  • I was not anemic before/during pregnancy however I did lose a lot of blood after my c/s because my uterus did not contract properly.  I was given four units of blood and felt much better after that.  I kept falling asleep while holding my dd the first day and I barely remember anything.
