DS likes crinkly stuffed animals and rattles. He has one toy that I reserve for tough situations because it's guaranteed to keep him quiet and occupied for at least 3 minutes. So, so worth the money. It's like a rattle/teether with links. (Can't find a link to it)
Mason LOVES Scout, the bendy ball (like the O ball everyone has been showing), Sophie, his tag blanket that I made him, but most of all... he loves his hands! If they are in his mouth, all is wonderful!
Re: Fave toys at 4-5 months?
A home made taggie blanket a lot like this one.
A 3" ring with a cloth clown rattle inside it. The clown's hands and feet are attached around the ring so they can slide (kinda hard to explain).

This one is also a fave. MIL got it for him, and I love love love it. He can easily grab it, it has a vibration pull thing, colorful things on it, it's soft, and the rattle sound is a very non-annoying chime sort of thing: https://www.amazon.com/Taggies-E00906-Grabby-Elephant-Toy/dp/B000H8ESQC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1316371292&sr=8-1
Sorry for the giant link.
Audrey will play with this all day long if I let her
This. Also, soft, krinkly books, rattles that make noise or he can chew. The Kick n' Play piano.is a hit too.
Jacques the Peacock (I htink it's by Lamaze) and a little panda Paci Plushie, even without the pacifier attached.
We have the O'Ball with the rattles in it
