Call OB after a fall?

Hey all. I just had a mysterious wipeout while walking back in from getting the mail. (I was looking through the mail rather than watching where I was going and probably tripped on a pinecone or crabapple or something.) I landed on my hands and knees and am very scraped up but I don't think my abdomen made contact with the ground at all, though it was obviously very jarring. Checked the HBs with a Doppler and they seem to be fine (144 and 136), and I'm feeling at least one baby kick. :)

I just mentioned this to a friend online and she said most recommend calling your OB after a fall of any kind. I don't remember my OB saying anything about this; would you call? (My next appt is 10/31.)

  • i fell like that when i was about that pregnant too. i didn't call my OB, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to give him or her a call!

  • i would be on the phone! Even though you fell on your hands & knees the shock from the fall could still disrupt other parts of your body. Get on the phone.

  • Yes, call to check in.  They will ask if you have felt movement, are you having contractions do you have any discharge.  I fell at about 20 weeks.  I'm glad I called, I didn't have to go in, i felt them both moving, no discharge and no contractions.
  • I was told to call and they mark it in your chart.  They want to know in case contractions start they will know you fell too.  They will also tell you to watch out for PTL

  • I know I'm late and you already called but I would have suggested it too just in case so I'm glad you did.  Let us know what they say!
  • Definitely call.  I feel in the middle of the night (I tripped over the rug going to the bedroom) when I was 29 weeks pregnant.  I felt both babies moving, so I assumed I was okay.  I gave my peri a call the next day and he totally yelled at me.  He said that you should always come in after a fall in pregnancy because there's a small risk of placenta abruption.  So I had to go into L&D and be monitored.  I ended up being admitted b/c I was having frequent BH contractions (which I'd been having all along) - but they wanted to keep me monitored for 23 hours after the fall.  Thankfully, everything was fine and I had no issues.  But you definitely want to let your doctor know that you fell, so you don't get yelled at like me.  =)

  • Wow, Rose, that must have been scary! Yeah, I was wondering if anything could have happened to the placenta.

Well, I am still waiting for them to call me back ... times like this I do wish our OB's office/hospital were a lot closer! (They're about 35 mins away. there's another hospital only about 10 mins away but I hadn't planned to deliver there since they don't have a NICU.)
