Negative blood type?

So I got a voice mail from the nurse practitioner saying my blood work was fine but I'm an A- type. If I have any bleeding to go in right away. The short of it is if the baby has a + blood type and if somehow (usually at birth when our blood may cross paths) my blood comes in contact with the baby's, my blood can attack the baby's. I'm asking DH what his type is. If he's also a negative, we're more okay. If he's a +, the baby could still be either. Anyone else come across this, being a negative blood type and having to take extra precautions?

Re: Negative blood type?

  • My husband is positive.  My parents aren't sure but they think I'm negative.  They know some of their kids are but don't know which...  So I may have this problem.  I will find out after my appointment in 3 weeks when they type my blood.

  • I'm A- and my husband is something positive. It was no big deal for me. I had to have a Rhogam shot about 28 weeks and then one again after birth.

  • Yep. O-

Got a shot at 9 weeks for spotting and will get one again at 28 weeks and again after delivery if the baby is +

It is seriously no big deal at all and NOTHING to worry at all about.

  • It's not actually a big deal. The danger isn't with your first baby, it is with your second. If your baby is + and your blood mixes with theirs, then your body will form antibodies against the + blood type. The the next time you get pregnant, your body will recognize the + antibodies and cause problems with the baby.

Luckily, there is a super easy fix, you just have to take a shot. If you have bleeding during this pregnancy then you'll get a shot right away. If you have no bleeding then you'll get the shot around 28 weeks. Then once the baby is born, if their blood turns out to be positive then you'll get another shot.

15% of people in North America are Rh negative, so this is super common.

Just one more thing, sometimes even if the husband is negative too, they'll give you the shot because paternity can sometimes be wrong/covered-up!

  • Wow, thanks everyone! I got the call and started playing Dr. Google. I figured it happens all the time but was curious who else was in the same situation. I'll play it safe and call the doc if there is any bleeding and look forward to some shots! Thanks!

This exactly!  I'm O-, DH is O+ (he thinks), but they never even asked.  I had spotting at 9w and got the shot just in case.  I HATE needles, but it was not bad at all.

  • I was O- and we weren't sure what DS was. I didn't have any problems. I was given a Rhogam shot at around 20 something weeks. When I went to the hospital and was in labor, they discovered my blood and the baby's had mixed. It was no big deal. I was given another Rhogam shot after delivery. Nobody ever told me I had to be careful.

Oh, and I should add that DS came out a +. :-)

  • Thanks again! I called back and had some other questions but, yeah, seems like I just have to be careful and not wait if I see any bleeding. Thank you for the reassuring words!

This exactly, even down to the blood type, lol. Parents with opposite blood types is pretty common so try not to worry unless something actually happens. **Deep breathe and realx**

  • I just came across this for the first time this morning.  I had some bleeding and they are now testing my blood to see what type I am, since I don't know.  I'm crossing my fingers that I am a + blood type!!  The nurse said that if my blood type is negative, I will have to get shots to prevent my blood from attacking my baby's.  Good luck to you!
  • It means you are Rh-.  If your husband isn't a - blood type then you will have to get Rhogam shots throughout your pregnancy and after delivery.  No extra precautions, just a few shots.

  • Both my H and I are -'s so even though they still want to have you get the Rhogam shot you really don't have too, based on the research I've done. Otherwise listen to what your Dr. said.

  • I am negative and my husband is positive.  I sadly miscarried my first and had to get the Rhogam shot to protect future pregnancies.  With this pregnancy, I had some spotting around week 4 and got the Rhogam shot as a precaution.  Its not a big deal at all, but it is very important to let you OB know if you do have any spotting.  I think you need the shot within 72 hrs for it to be effective.

  • I am O- and my husband is B+.  We were told that if I have bleeding along with a heartbeat they would give me a shot.  If I don't have those things then I will be ok with having opposite blood.

  • imageI am RH negative too!  I am A- and my hubby is O+  I had a shot at 9 weeks because I had some spotting... THen I will have another shot at 28 weeks and then again after I deliver.. Seems to be no big deal though... My doctor wasn't worried... just a precaution.. It is actually a precaution for your future pregnancies more than this one..

  • Yeah it's not a problem, I am O- and hubby is A+ so I'll be getting the shot at 28 weeks then after birth.

Hey, does anyone know what happens if daddy is - and mom is +? I guess they don't worry about it?
