Another Pelvic Exam Question

So, I've had plenty of pelvic exams, but I hear that sometimes since your cervix is so full of blood that you may bleed after they do it. Anyone have or not have this.

It really makes me nervous that I'm having someone I don't know (OBGYN is different from my regular doctor) do it an not my doctor.

Re: Another Pelvic Exam Question

  • The last one I had done my Dr said that there's a possibility of bleeding, but didn't see any blood inside so didn't think I'd have any. I didn't, but yeah it would freak me out if I saw some. I appreciated them telling me that in advance.

  • I remember having very light spotting on the day of my exams. I just made sure I had some liners with me. I think for me it was usually just on the TP.

  • Yeah, it's not uncommon to have light spotting after a pelvic exam (or even sex) when you are pregnant.  Usually it's only pink or brown.
  • I had bleeding during the exam and spotting after.  I was worried, but MW reassured me that its normal after an exam.  She told me it wasn't from the cervix but the tissues around it.  It went away by that evening.

  • It is normal, but just to throw out another point of view: if you're nervous why have a pelvic exam? There's really nothing the doctor can confirm that way he/she couldn't confirm another way, especially early in your pregnancy, and it can introduce infection. There is no need for pelvic exams early in pregnancy (and there's really no need late in pregnancy, either, unless you're deciding if your body is ripe for induction for some reason!).

    Good luck!
