Ovarian Cyst

I am 11 weeks pregnant and went to see my doctor for some abdominal pain. When they looked they saw a large liquid filled cyst on my ovaries. So my question is, can the cyst harm the baby in any way?

Re: Ovarian Cyst

  • I have a blood filed cyst on my right ovary. Started at almost 7cm when I was 5 weeks, then it went down to 4cm a week later. I didn't know I had it until I went to my first appt. I had some pain as well.. But since the cyst has decreased it hasn't been bothering me.

My OB said it was fairly normal and no harm to the baby, but they would continue to watch it. I wouldn't worry...Apparently they are common and have a lot to do with hormones. Just take it easy, I know easier said than done! Tylenol is what they recommended to me for pain, but I might as well eat a tic tac, didn't do much for me.

  • Nope can't harm the baby ...I have a history of fluid filled cysts on my ovaries that come and go during my cycle due to hormone fluctuations...sometimes I even feel them " pop" ! . If your doctor was concerned she would have said something.

  • Ok I was just worried because, I have had them in the past and when they burst the pain is pretty intense for me. So I didn't know what my little one would feel. I also told my doctor that I get really bad migrains so the doctor told me that some tylenol should help with all of those problems i am having.... not so much. Smile

  • The baby is tucked safely inside your uterus in a protective bubble so it isn't going to feel a cyst bursting on your ovary.

This. You may feel a little pain when it pops, but it'll go away right after.

  • How large is your cyst?  I will preface this by saying the cyst itself cannot hurt the baby.  That being said, a cyst that is large can be very painful when it pops, ranging from not being able to stand up straight to fainting from the pain. Again, this won't hurt the baby, but can put you in danger if, say, you were driving when it burst.

At my 5w ultrasound they found a 6 cm cyst, and decided if it grew larger, they would perform surgery after I got out of my first tri to prevent it from popping while pregnant.  It will be tracked throughout my pregnancy.  At this point, since it isn't growing or shrinking, they're just going to wait until I have the baby to remove it.
