Did anyone's LO NOT grow out of their milk protein allergy? (little girl TMI)

I'm just wondering about those who had LOs diagnosed with a milk protein allergy with gastrointestinal/eczema-type symptoms.  We tried milk with DD at age 1 and age 2 and had bad results both times.  They say most who are going to grow out of it do so by age 2.  We tried again at age 3, and she seemed to be ok.  We started giving her more things with milk in them, and now she eats regular yogurt, cow's milk in her cereal, etc.

BUT...over the past month (we started giving her regular milk about 2-3 months ago), she's developed a cut on her perenium, like the skin split open.  I called the dr. & the nurse told me to keep vaseline on it and it should heal, but as soon as I stop putting the vaseline on it, the cut comes back.  Now it's starting to almost look like a diaper rash is starting on her labia.

I think I'm going to take her in to see the doctor to make sure she doesn't have an infection, but I'm also wondering if the milk could be causing a diaper-rash like reaction.  That's exactly what it looks like.  And the other night we were at my mom's and they ordered pizza.  We used to bring food for DD with us everywhere, but since she'd been doing so well, we let her have the pizza for dinner.  She ate about 1/2 slice, but the next day by lunchtime, she was complaining that her belly hurt, and before we knew it she was in the bathroom with diarrhea :(

Did anyone who's LO had a milk allergy not outgrow it, but the symptoms maybe changed?  We're taking a break from the milk until it's all sorted out, but I'm wondering if anyone had an experience to share?

  • Ari is now able to have certain cheeses occasionally & if they are cooked - like mozzarella in a pasta bake (with gluten free noodles). I'm the same way. If I have milk more than that I get only minor to medium GI symptoms, but I get horrible acne & my asthma & allergies get really out of hand.

I used to vary between constipation and diarrhea + reflux when I was younger, & I think dairy was the culprit now that I know I'm allergic. It was unknown till I had to give it up for Ari.

  • Both of my kids outgrew it by 1.  I'm so sorry you are going through this!  That first year was so hard, esp. when I was nursing and couldn't eat anything...I can't imagine having to deal with that indefinitely.  Sad

  • I'm wondering if your doctor would order an allergy test.  I would think that it would include testing not for a milk allergy but also wheat sensitivity.   My ds has had some similar issues, but we've kept him on soy milk, so i'm not sure.  I'm curious to see what other people say.

  • My son's milk allergy shows up on a test as almost gone---like basically not there--yet he still has major reactions.  I guess they can be allergic on a cellular level--not even sure what that means.  I'm going to see an allergist about it.  So it's kind of tough, because you think you are in the clear and then WHAM.

Also--was there ever a wheat allergy???  Could she have celiac??

  • I doubt there's a wheat allergy.  She's had wheat products from day 1 & been fine as long as we didn't give her milk.  I was so happy to have her off soy and not have to bring food with me everywhere I go.  It was so nice that she could eat what other kids were eating.  I hope it's not the milk :(

  • My DH developed an allergy at about 20, where he gets super sick if he has milk or icecream. He can still eat yogurt/cheeses/etc.

DD#1 had to be on soy formula and around 20 months started having issues, and recently got switched to Lactaid. DD#2 is also on soy. The woman I talked to at WIC said that these things can be genetic and if they are, the kids might outgrow it but probably would not. :(

They all also sneeze whenever they walk into the sunlight, so we joke that they're all allergic to the sun, too, lol.
