FOODIES, can we reminisce??

So this last week the m/s has hit me like a freight train and I'm eating like a starving student -- ramen noodles, campbell's soup and crackers. Oh how I miss the appetite for the things I really LOVE.  My mantra used to be "every meal is an opportunity to taste something wonderful, and you won't get that opportunity back if you waste it."

In honor of food snobs everywhere relegated to saltines and gatorade, let's share our favorites! here's my countdown:

3: Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, Filet Mignon.  Seasoned and seared to perfection at about 1800 degrees, then served in all its buttery deliciousness on a 500 degree plate so every bite is as warm and juicy as the last (I like to sear all sides of every bite on the plate so its like a tiny morsel in every bite!)

2: Steakhouse 55, Disneyland Resort, Creme Br?l?e: Yes, I love this dessert from almost anywhere, but Steakhouse 55 actually does it correctly.  The br?l?e top is like a buttery sweet glass window to the absolute luxury beneath it. So smooth and creamy - and true vanilla flavor.  I have actually LICKED the dish clean...and I wasn't even pregnant.

1: Crepes. 1st: Crepes de Paris, Strawberry Nutella Crepe.  They're NOT thin pancakes, they're way better than that!  Plus the mixture of fresh, succulent summer strawberries with the chocolatey, nuttiness of Nutella is the perfect match.  They're served with house-made chantilly cream; sweet, light, and fluffy.

TRUE #1: Old Vine Cafe, Ricotta Mousse Crepe.  Its like a breakfast dessert, light and simple, but sweet and complicated at the same time. This is maybe the thing I miss most. Its filled with a homemade ricotta that's lightly sweetened, then "mousse-i-fied".  Served with a mandarin orange coulis that's got almost a champagne-like bubbliness to it, I can't even explain it... it.is.heaven.

So what do you miss??

  • Nothing that fancy :)  Mostly sushi - hamachi (yellow tail) specifically.  And to have a nice bottle of red wine with a good meal...  *sigh*

Honestly, my husband is the foodie between the two of us LOL We used to eat really well when we lived in Las Vegas.  I think the restaurants there are one of the two things I miss about Vegas (my family is the other)

  • Oh I LOVE when we go to Vegas!  Our families both live near there and you're right, the food is incredible!

We don't eat that fancy that often, maybe twice a year, but I look forward to it every time!

Mine aren't quite as fancy as yours but here are a few things I would love to eat but I know they'd all hate me right now.

    3. Baked rigatony: It's the specialty of a local Italian restaurant that's rigatony with italian sausage in a creamy cheese sauce spiked with marinara then baked.

    2. Chicken Tika Masala with basmati rice: rich creamy buttery tomato sauce with just the right amount of spice swimming on perfectly cooked rice.

    1. Puerco en Chipotle: Tender pork carnitas simmered in a tomatillo-chipolte sauce and topped with melty Oaxaca cheese.

  • Ok this is totally lame and cheating but I don't feel like I am capable of typing out thoughts on lots of delicious food right now. Just needed to throw my hat in the ring for the food-loving crowd- some day I'll be back to my former foodie self!

  • I'm a bartender, so I miss a lot of the fancy, delicious cocktails I used to invent for special occasions at my bar. I haven't worked since getting pregnant! Some of my favorite drinks were Apple Pie Martinis, Sour Jesters (tasted EXACTLY like a gummy peach), and Blackberry Bellinis. Gaaaah.

  • My husband and I treated ourselves to a very fancy dinner a couple of weeks ago. Something we did often before our daughter was born, but haven't since she was born. It wqs spectacular. We ordered a cheese plate appetizer, beautifully presented greek salad, a filet and the best scallops i have ever tasted in my life. We ended up taking a lot home since my m/s had just let up and my stomach just couldn't take all that food. It was incredible. I miss the foodie/wine-o versions of ourselves.

  • The saddest part for me is that some dishes just don't taste the same without a really great glass of wine along with it. We have several bottles of red we brought back fro Napa last summer that can't wait to be opened. Oh well, it's just another 6 months or so...

  • I'm not exactly a foodie, but I miss the way my food used to taste prior to my pregnancy.

Connors' (a NICE Steak Restraunt in Huntsville,AL) The Spinach-Strawberry Salad: DELICIOUS fresh spinach with freshly sliced strawberries almonds and a sweet strawberry sauce.

Outback Steak House:  I absolutely love their Loaded Cheese Fries, I can't stomach greasy food anymore, with the horrible M/S.

I miss my yummy salads from Connors' and my greasy super cheesy fries from Outback. ::LOL::

  • YES!!! This is soooo sad! I am a total foodie, from taco trucks to 5 start restaurants, I love to try new things and very rarely meet a cuisine/dish I don't like. BUT since getting pg, not much really appeals to me. My husband was asking me what he should make for dinner this week (he has a light week at work) and I said I didn't care, I just didn't want to talk about it because just talking about food makes me feel ill. Usually we really enjoy planning a weeks worth of meals together, but not anymore. I really really really hope I get my regular appetite back sooner or later (2nd time moms? reassure me!).

One thing I'm specifically missing is this artisanal cocktail bar (they call themselves an "apothecary") in my neighborhood that we frequented before. They make some really unusual drinks with house made infusions and other creations. I would probably feel ok drinking just one small drink, but even a tiny sip of alcohol really upsets my stomach now, so I'll just wait until after I give birth.

My problem exactly.  I am not going to go out and spend 40.00-50.00 on a plate and then sit and drink water with it.  Sorry.  I would rather wait the six months and really enjoy the experience.  The last time we went out for a nice dinner was in August and that was for my husband's birthday.  I can't punish him just because I can't enjoy.

I agree.  We have a 4,000 bottle wine cellar in our basement (we built our house last year and this was a big splurge) and every time I walk by I am sad that I cannot enjoy the wine in it!  The good thing is, we are building up our collection and are saving all of the really great wine we are ordering this year.
